Extended Warranty Options

Hi All,

I am close to pulling the trigger on a 2020 M4 Comp but it's out of warranty and the BMW dealer wants $2k for the first year and then each additional year is priced at $1200. Has anyone gone through this process recently? I negotiated a decent price on the car, $54k and it has 21000 miles, but I'm not sure I want to spend much more knowing it will depreciate a bit with the LCI coming out this year. Thank you all in advance.

I just bought the same car last week and I went with the "Platinum" plan good for 2 years or 20,000km for $5512.00 Canadian.Car has 6,000km's and will be a week old (for me)tomorrow.
I will use the 2 years up first,as I only drive 4,000KM's per year.H50

Do you think the F8X is going to depreciate more because the G8x LCI is this year? The current price, and demand, of the F8x is strong because the G8x design is polarizing so there’s more demand for the F8x and the release of G8x LCI won’t change that. I personally know several people who have not stepped up to the newer G8x because of its looks and lack of DCT. You’re either in the G8x camp or you’re not. I have yet to meet someone that’s on the fence when it comes to the G8x.

Yes, I do believe with the LCI the depreciation curve on an F8X will slightly increase.

The used car market for the F8x is softening and it has nothing to do with the G8x. New G8x LCI will not impact the F8x used car market. The LCI will not entice people who like the F8x because there aren’t many people cross shopping the F8x and G8x. The G8x used car prices are dropping pretty fast right now. The G8x used car market will be affected by the G8x LCI.

It’s a used car so it’s going to depreciate. Buying the warranty doesn’t increase the value of your used car; instead, the warranty is an additional one-time expense that you elected to pay based on how risk-averse you are. The price you paid, without tax and without the warranty cost, is the starting price for your car’s depreciation curve. You’ll never get back the tax and warranty costs when buying a used car (excluding exotics, true limited edition cars, etc.).

Don’t buy a used car if you’re already concerned about its future value. Covid was an anomaly for the value of used cars and things are finally being corrected. Nevertheless, G8x LCIs will not affect F8x used car prices just like the F8x LCIs did not affect e9x M3 used car prices.

Extended warranties for these cars are pretty expensive even when buying it while the car is still under original warranty. But once the car is out of warranty it limits the choices available for extended warranties and makes them even more expensive. Also not all warranties are the same. Big difference between a platinum-level exclusionary warranty and powertrain and deductibles can range from zero to $500 (or maybe even $1000). So difficult to tell how expensive the quoted warranty price is without knowing more about the policy.

I always found that the best warranties are official dealer extended. Can even be negotiated as part of the deal. Although these are only generally offered if the car is still within its initial warranty period.

I agreed on an extended 3 year warranty with a main dealer when buying my 2019 F83.
Purchased my M4 cab at 2.5 year old.
I ended up with a 12 months approved used BMW warranty, with an additional 3 year dealer extended to start once the 12 month BMW approved used ended.
Basically a 4 year warranty.
Cost £1500 UK sterling. Discounted price as part of the deal. Think they wanted circa £2800 without discount
Was it worth it……..most definitely.
Albeit the car was only 1 owner low mileage and extremely well looked after it suffered with some very common M4 cab issues.
I.e. Water build up in rear quarters due to blocked drain plugs, exhaust cams tapping (very common on the S55) which needed to be retorqued. Plus a few trim issues.
All covered with the warranty with no issues.
Still have 2 years warranty remaining.

X4M came with the standard 12 month approved used warranty. Again one owner low miles nice car. As mentioned previously by others, I could not extend the warranty further as it was just out of its initial warranty period of 3 years.
Already had to replace the emergency battery (another common issue). Apparently a labour intense job to replace a £70 part as it is located in the headliner below the shark fin antenna. £600-700 dealer job saved with the initial warranty.

I suppose as others have said, it’s all about your own personal risk analysis and funding. I have never once previously purchased a warranty in my 30plus years of driving. But have done recently on my M cars. As much as they are reliable they can also be expensive to fix

One good check would be to look into the history of the car to see if any common issues have been addressed. Typically as with the ones I mentioned above.

I knew when I got my 2018 F80 that I was going to get an extended waranty. I cross shopped OEM vs 3rd party, and went with a Platnium bumper to bumper 3rd party with a $250 deductible. So far, in the past five months, it has covered a new gas tank back in 09/23, and this past week a new valve cover. Both repairs totaled $6,900 at the dealer and my OOP expense was $500. The warranty cost was $3,200, and covers me for five additional years and 100k additional miles. It's a no brainer to get one with these cars.

The pricing on that warranty seems like a no brainer. The dealer said their "best" price for what looks like a good extended warranty is 4 years and 48,000 miles. Could you send me the exact warranty you got? Thanks for the help!

For those interested, I ended up getting a 5 year 60k mile comprehensive warranty with zero deductible. The cost was $3800 and it is transferable or I can get my money back on whatever coverage is remaining when I sell.
