What gen is tire is a pilot sport star
Replaced a couple of front tires via my BMW agent. I did specify at least PS4S but one of these turned up on front.
Wondering what these are as not PS4S star. Don’t think I’ve come across a pss star before |

I have star PSS on all 4 corners of my F82. They are a thing.

PSS* are the original tires that came with the car. Star Spec is a BMW thing.

Thanks for the replies.
I’m taking the car back to the dealer as I’d specified PS4s for the front to match the rears. Bit surprised they were fitted as quite an old model these days. But dealer happy to put right. |

The PSS* spec was developed specifically for the f8x in 255/40-18 & 275/35-18, and 255/35-19 & 275/35-19, and 265/30-20 & 285/30-20. It is one generation older than the PS4S. The PS4S* spec in 255/35-19 & 275/35-19 (no 18” or 20” PS4S* spec available except for the 285/30-20) sizes weren’t developed specifically for the f8x so that doesn’t really make them any better or worse than the PS4S non-* spec (blackwall) tires that fit the f8x. The PSS* spec f8x compounds were developed by BMW and Michelin specifically for the f8x whereas the PS4S* spec compounds were not developed by BMW and Michelin for the f8x. Furthermore, the PSS* spec f8x tires have a much stiffer sidewall than the PS4S* spec and non-* spec tires. Having used the stiffer PSS* spec and the PS4S non-* spec tires, the PSS* spec provides superior steering feedback than the PS4S* spec and non-* spec tires. You have to run 10-15% higher internal pressures with the PS4S* spec and non-* spec tires to better match the PSS* spec and non-* spec tire sidewall stiffness. Just because the PSS* spec and non-* spec tires are older, it doesn’t make them a bad tire.

Excellent info and thanks and take your point on newer not necessarily better. Had that when I changed to PSS when Bridgestone dropped RE11 in the 2010s . Grip reduced as did turn in on the odd trackdays. But PSS were fine for eveyday driving.
On the PSS star the dealer’s tyre supplier ended up only sending 1 front pss star tyre dispite having 2 listed. It also had manufacturing date of 2022 so not exactly freash. Wasn’t sure if it was new old stock and if they are still being made. Eitherway there where no more in the country which ment having car off road for longer Dealer ended up fitting standard ps4s to the front yesterday. I’d had ps4s put on the rears late last year so good to have them match. |
