Consensus on wheel studs?

Yes for a street car that sees 5-7 events per season? Major reasons to not do it?

What with swaps between street and race pads, summer and winter setups, my OEM bolts take a beating and need replaced in less than than 2 seasons.

And, I’d need some recommendations for stud kits, with my thanks.

it's all a matter of personal preference is what i've learned. some folks like to run studs, others like the bolts.

i have studs on my track car, but my buddy has bolts on his track car. so

MSI studs, not cheap, but you get what pay for

5-7 events a season will be you replacing studs annually.

If you're messing with them when they're hot then increase your likelihood for failure.


I replace twice a year on my E92 but those are M12.

Once a year when I was tracking my F80. Heavier car so I take less chances.

Studs break. No fun to drill out in the paddock.

I use the Bimmerworld race studs for the F8X. As they are 14mm I haven't had a failure yet.

On my E9Xs I also use the BW studs and have moved to 14mm on those cars as well, also zero failures since doing the switch. Very rare to have a failure before then. I used cheaper Apex ones before and that was a disaster.

I sometimes think of putting studs on my X5 and Mini as well. Makes wheel changes so much easier!

Are you using slicks? If it’s a stock or 200tw tire, are you still needing to change annually?

(I never had studs or bolts as a replacement item on 200tw tires, but maybe I should?)

Nothing wrong with studs. If you get studs, i recommend you get the m14x1.25 to m14x1.5 studs. Much faster screwing on the nuts and wider variety of m14x1.5 nuts. Turner/ECS and Bimmerworld have stud kits.

I have the m14x1.25 studs and nuts. It feels like im turning a nut for a good 3 mins before it begins to tighten onto the wheel.

I only use slicks. Doesn't make sense to switch from a street tire to another street tire.

I've broken a set of M14 as well. Had two snap off and getting those out was no fun.

For me, both studs and lugs are a wear item on a car that is tracked regularly. I don’t feel studs are any “safer” than lugs. Studs in my view is mostly a convenience item that make installing wheels an easier feat. The drawback is that a sheared stud can be a real pain to remove, whereas a sheared lug is usually really easy to remove (I’ve sheared 3 in my 26 years of tracking). I personally don’t feel the need for studs and have always used lugs.

If you switch out wheels regularly, studs make your life much easier.

I use studs on my race cars, but not on my street cars. Mostly a convenience thing. Wheel changes are a little quicker and easier with studs. I use the msi high strength ones.

What are your thoughts on MSI vs APR?

(I too use studs on my racer and replace annually with hubs when I go over the car in the off season)

Depends on how often you’re removing wheels, local weather, hours on track, etc.

I notice the MSI lugs wearing a bit faster than the studs. In my situation I’m expecting them to last 2 years.

I'm using the MSI ones now after I've had a couple of the cheaper apex versions bend or break. I would have no problem going at least two seasons with the MSI studs, so they might actually save money in the end. I love the bullet nose too, so easy to throw wheels on there.

Studs make life 100% easier if you are living a spacer based life too, currently using the BW premium studs.
