Report: F80 M3 Is the New BMW M3 / M4 -- Sedan Comes First in 2013!
BIMMERPOST NEWS Report: F80 M3 Is the New BMW M3 / M4 -- Sedan Comes First in 2013! Call this a first. As BMW enthusiasts know, BMW models have an internal model code, like "E90" for the soon-to-be-replaced 3-series sedan and "F30" for its successor debuting later this year. M models traditionally share very few common parts with their regular BMW AG siblings, so they receive a unique development code. For example, the current M3 is internally referred to as E90M, the new M5 as F10M. It now appears however that BMW has gone beyond just adding an M designation and has given the new M3 based on the F3x 3-series a completely different model code. We're the first to share that it will be internally called the F80 M3. There's a bit of new BMW trivia to give you bragging rights when arguing with friends and family members. Along with this news comes word that the F80 M3 will indeed return in sedan form (already spied in testing)! The BMW F80 M3 Sedan will likely have its market launch in summer 2013, uncharacteristically before the F82 M4 coupe. As things look to us, the M3 sedan will be the only model called M3. M3 coupe and convertible versions (F82 M3 and F83 M3) will likely be branded as M4. This might have played a role in BMW's decision for another iteration of the M3 sedan. Previous rumors of BMW not bringing another M3 sedan turned out to be wrong, afterall. Just remember that since we're quite a bit away from the market launch of the new F80 M3, some things could still change and until BMW announces publicly, everything is rumor. But, this news comes on reliable authority. Stay tuned for more information on the F8x M3 and enjoy our previous coverage -- including the first sets of spyshots -- here: http://www.bimmerpost.com/m3/f30m3/ |

Kinda making sense now....
SCOTT26 told us M3 name would live on, but of course we know the coupe will be a 4er. They could make a few F80 M3 sedans, charge a bit more and have a few premium features for an F82 M4 coupe. |

Kinda lame that the M3 name badge will be solely on a sedan now. Don't get me wrong, I love that they're bringing the sedan back, but changing the M3 coupe to the M4...that is very disappointing.

This had better be the best goddamned M ever because the way they're playing name games and everything else they're doing to screw up is gonna spell doom. I bought the last proper M car, it'll be worth a mint.

I still can't get over the 4 series name. BMW are making the 4 series name just so they can charge more for it. What was the need to separate the 3 series saloon/coupe into different brands? It has always worked well and 4 is such a crap number! M4 coupe? No thanks. M3 is a great name.

As excited as I am they are bringing back the M3 in sedan form, I don't like how they're going to spin off an "M4" for the coupe.

you guys have to get over the naming thing And for all those complaining about how they are doing it just for extra $$$, I thought that was the point of companies, to make as much money as they can. BMW is a business with share holders just like any other company, if they can grow their margins by doing this then why wouldn't they? its working for Audi, BMW doesn't care about a few thousand die hards, they care about the masses who are willing to pay more.
I am just happy the M3 Sedan will be back and for summer 2013 I will most likely be picking one up in Fall 2013 as that is when my warranty on the C63 will end and although I love the brute power of the AMG, I want to try a more fuel effecient and better handling BMW again. M3 name still lives on, and I bet they are doing it so people get used to the M4 name, then next gen they will get rid of the M3 Sedan and just have the M4 Coupe... |

so every ODD number BMW will be a sedan
ie...3, 5, 7 and every EVEN Number BMW will be a coupe ie..6 and 8 series (back in the days) so if this is what BMW wants then it beggs the question about wha BMW is going to do with the 1 series. |
