As far as the safety of the airplanes goes, in the 70s 80s and 90s, I don't think the DC-10 was any worse than the 727, or 747. They had a problem with the back cargo door, which caused one horrific hull loss. The American Airlines flight out of Chicago crashed because the pilots didn't realize they only had 2 engines not three, and cut back power too far. If they'd known they only had 2 engines, they would've applied more power.
IIRC, when the engine left the wing it took with it the hydraulics on that side causing the leading edge slats to retract and then stall quicker than would be expected. Hence the left turn dive into the ground. That one was on AA maintenance cutting corners during engine mounting/dismounting weakening the pylon/leading to the detachment. Definitely one of the more horrible/completely preventable accidents in US aviation history.
It seems the hydraulics on that plane were a big problem. Because of that tail engine. Especially on the United flight that crashed in Iowa. When that fan blade wet, it shredded everything

Yah three redundant systems are no good when they are so close to each other they all get taken out in an incident like that.

I have a former flight attendant working for me a few years ago, and her husband at the time was still a pilot. They had a pair of parakeets. The parakeets name?

Pratt and Whitney

I always thought that was really funny.

Nice! what's the base MF? I'm out of the loop as not buying until Q3 or Q4

In other news I'm vacationing from nothing in Seattle this week and, despite being here just 2 months ago, I gotta say the construction is insane - it feels like they're building the city around you and it's non-stop 24/7. The other crazy thing I can't get over is how low the average age is; early 30s for sure. If I was young, single, and looking for a city it'd definitely be here. Pretty cool car scene too - not quite as big as california, but lots of cool stuff around

I used to live just to the left at the base of those mountains. Went to Milpitas HS for a while in the late 80s before we moved down to Camarillo.

Also, my wife passed on the X3M, she wasn't ready for a SUV and was actually a bit turned of by the seats (narrow bottom). She also said she wasn't a fan of how "jumpy" she said the car felt when hitting the gas nor the amount of M adjustable stuff etc. It is the first time ever I think I/we've gone to pick up a car and didn't. I even ordered a winter set from Tire Rack and I'll have to return those now, which I've never done. Luckily they are still wrapped and were never put on the vehicle.

But, she drove a S5 sportback and she absolutely loved that. We found out we can put both of our (daughters and mine) hockey bags/sticks back there no problem. It is amazing the space it has in that hatch so we bought our fist Audi last night. Sorry Lups, but you don't talk to me anymore now anyway so at least you have a reason now.

The good thing is that it is quite bit cheaper (64k MSRP - 12k in discounts/rebates) and the winter set was half that of the X3Ms. The seats are a lot more comfortable and they have a massaging function, which was the nail in the coffin for the X3M as far as my wife was concerned. It is actually somewhat fun/sporty to drive to.

Edit: Gruss, I believe the base money factor for BMW was .00142 or 3.4%. Higher than last month, but the rebates were higher as well. By the time you are ready Trump will most likely have trashed the economy and rates will be 0 etc.

I said this about the new X3M Comp spring settings are WAY to reboundish. Like far too much. There is also a lack of feedback from the car because of it. You feel a bit here and there but you don't generally get any feel from the car.

As I drive a Macan S w/ Fixed Suspension, I went to drive a X3M Comp/X4M Comp and I had to push the suspension setting to the hardest setting and it still comes NO where close to how i want the car to feel. Is the Macan S Fixed Suspension too stiff? Slightly yes as the rebound is pretty hard and you get a lot of bumps unlike the Porsche Air Suspension. However the settings on the X3M/X4M Comp are so damn soft it's amazing how annoying that is to me.

I think you read about my RS5 review thinggie I did right? I liked that car. I still do. It's a good change from the typical BMW stuff. I'm just not a fan of the recent watering down of BMW stuff.

Like I get all the changes and what BMW is doing. Cost cutting etc. BMW's cars are all faster and faster but they feel less and less interesting and unique to me. It's getting to a point where I want to keep a BMW in my garage if I do move into a GT3 or something but I just don't know at this point if I want to.

Also, I have had the new G20s as loaners now and I don't think it will be a car for me. Why? The seats. There is this little... edge? on the two front seats that dig into the back of my knee. BMW extended the edge of the seats a tad bit and now it just irritatingly hits my leg. I am not that short, but not that tall either at 5'7" but these new seats annoy me too.

Yeah, damn, Cali is expensive, but you sure do get what you pay for.

Another funny Cali / Minnesota anecdote - We're starting to really love Seattle such an awesome city with the best vibe ever but OT - anyway we went there for a vacation-lite last week and my mom asked if it was good weather. Answer: YES, it was cold and rainy! because it's been hot and sunny here in NorCal, true top-down weather during the day, so nice to get the change

Here's some shot of Seattle:

Lake Union (north side of Seattle):

Lake Union wide-angle:

KSTW channel 11 towers, and then all the way across Lake Washington (which you can't see) you can see Bellevue, and behind that you can just make out the Cascades (mt baker, glacier peak, etc)

Looming large, right here you can't see beautiful Mt. Ranier!

Great metaphorical shot of how I feel about my country these days:

Though I've been at the Seattle airport once, last summer, my one scheduled visit (my aunt lived on the Olympic peninsula somewhere) got shut down because my wife wasn't feeling it with the pregnancy of the younger twins.

When were we supposed to visit?

9-12-2001. We would've had to have stayed quite a while

I did live in Tri-Cities when I was real small, for like six months or so. I understand it has a much different climate than Seattle.

Let's be honest: we all knew Minnie was going to betray us at some point ... I, for one, am glad it's over and we can all finally move on.

With that, in coffee news, my wife and I love the stumptown cold brew (disclosure: a friend of a friend started stumptown and sold it to a sketchy private equity group; like minn19, that's another story with lots of sex, intrigue and betrayal too)

Anyway, for years I've been buying my roasted coffee in bulk (5 lbs) from Redbird Coffee in Montana. When it arrives (usually 3 days post-roast), I immediately put it into valved coffee bags and then it goes into the freezer. Each bag holds about 12 oz and is only opened once: before it's all ground up for a batch of cold brew. I've found this method to be both cheap and keep the coffee 99% fresh for up to a year (since O2 is the enemy of roasted coffee beans - the roasted beans outgas, pushing out all of the oxygen keeping them nice and protected in pillow of CO2)

Well, today I did the math and it turns out that a 12oz bottle of Stumptown cold brew is $3.79, but my redbird is $0.38 / 12oz. That's right, 10x cheaper!

So why am I telling you this? Because that's WHAT'S UP!!

- And a strong unified network of allies

- And moral clarity vs the world's tyrants

How's it going to feel then?
