BOOSTane to bring CA 91 gas to 93

So living in CA we mainly have access to ACN 91 and worse yet I hear it's not even true 91 octane but getting closer to 89 octane.

I swear as the weather is getting hotter I'm hearing knocking/detonation under full throttle, the classic rattle/ping noise that everyone dreads. I only pump at Shell.

What I would do to get good true 93 octane but it seems an impossible dream around here. Anybody use BOOSTane to try and raise their 91 to 93? I hear it absolutely works! According to their calculation on the website, 2.7 ounces of BOOSTane Professional will turn 16 gallons of 91 into true 94 octane. I hope my math is correct: 0.17 oz per gallon according to the chart below.

Considering they sell them in 32oz cans, 1 can will treat nearly 12 fill-ups, which sounds like a bargain! Did they change their formula recently? I recall someone saying that half a can (16oz) was needed to turn 16 gallons into 93.

Has anybody used this stuff long term? I'm about to pull the trigger on the 6 pack for $165 on Amazon.

I use the professional on Shell 91ACN...definitely works and it cleans up timing corrections with this junk fuel. I'm definitely in agreement that the fuel quality is pretty poor. I got a 6pack as well of the professional until I get flexfuel tuned with Ecutek software.

For 10gal I usually do 4oz. Makes it simple and adds a little headroom. I treat the 91ACN like 87. If you want no timing corrections add 1oz per gal :P

I have personally seen boostane foul plugs and literally turn them orange, so just be careful.

I've been reading a bit on that with Torco and BOOSTane but it seems like the majority with issues use a really high concentration. We're talking 1-2 bottles or more per tank, shooting for race gas octane levels.

Personally, I'm not shooting for 100+, just looking to make CA 91 bearable to use. Do you think I would have issues with maybe 3-4 oz per tank? On their website they specifically say it's safe for O2 sensors, cats and plugs.... but who knows...

In order to see some kind of real octane increase, my clients had to go way above the recommended amounts in the chart.

The torco does seem to work a little better than the boostane

Do you only go to the same Shell station? If so it might be time to try another one. I've found that gas quality differences are usually much bigger depending on the person running the place than by the brand name on the sign out front. For what it's worth I'm also in SoCal and I'm having no issues with Costco gas.

You are tuned I assume? I find it hard to believe knocking/pinging on 91 octane with stock tune will occur.

There are 3 Shell stations I alternate between.

Yes, tuned with Stage 2 AlpineMSS 91 map. Had the same pinging/knocking when I was using BM3 as well even on the ACN91 maps.

Interesting, what kind of concentrations are you seeing chetrickerman? 1 32oz bottle to a tank?

Interested as well, because I use 1 bottle per tank, but only on track days.

I was testing the BM3 Stage 1 91ACN map on the 91oct Shell gas about a month ago and I kept getting 2-3 knocks per pull. Again, this was on Stage 1 91ACN (aka shitty 91oct map) which is less aggressive than a regular stage 1 91oct map. Anyways, every pull resulted in at least 1-2 knocks. Sent the logs to BM3 and I was told it was the worst quality gas they ever seen on S55. They asked me to log on stock map, which I did. Stock logs had at least 1-2 knocks per pull as well and BM3 said the gas quality was more like 88-89oct at best. I stopped going to that Shell station. In fact, only been using Chevron since then. So yea, even stock map can have issues on this crap 91oct.

Nope, no issues with Chevron so far but I wouldn't be surprised if I experienced similar issues with 91oct from a different Chevron station. I feel like it's more station specific problem then brand specific one but I'm still sticking with Chevron for now.

Holy crap, the Dodge Demon guys are only putting 1/2 a can of Boostane with 10 gallons and they are seeing big results both on the dyno and drag strip.

MMT is a metallic additive used in practically all the octane boosters. It does work, Torco has some of the highest concentrations. Lucas is up there too. There is no free lunch, however. Research shows MMT does leave deposits on pistons and spark plugs and can plug the cat over time. I recently read the technical documents for the BMW B58 engine and it says not to use fuels with metallic additives (this is MMT).

In a hot rod magazine test, MMT additives on high compression naturally aspirated engine. 87 with booster made more power than 87, but 91 with booster made less power than 91. 100 octane unleaded made more power than 91. 110 leaded was the most powerful. Turbo engine results may vary.

I looked at the info for Sunoco pump 100, it does give the exact blend, but it mentions it contains tolulene.

C&D tested 91 vs 93 on a F90 M5 Comp, 93 was 617 at the wheels, while 91 was 604.
93 was 1/10th better to 60, 100 and in the 1/4, although both trapped at 130mph.

I have used Lucas in the past in my e39 m5 and it does seem to reduce the quick high load ping, but I don't think I'll use i reguaraly.
