Hi everyone,

I deleted my resonator about 1.5yrs ago and I liked the sound increase, especially once I added BM3 with medium pops/cracks/burbles, etc. However, since the 1st day I did that until now, there has been a small issue that bothers me.

When I shift gears 1-4 without getting on it, sound is great. Although, when I hit 5th gear, the sound disappears until I hit about 3,500 rpm (i.e. get on it) then the sound comes back again, same with 6th gear.

The question::::: I cant remember if the stock exhaust did that or this is a direct result of the resonator delete?

FYI - did research the forum, no mention of this specific issue.

That sounds really weird, but since you did it 1.5 yr ago and been having the issue since, I assume you're fine and it can't be anything engine related / serious.

Did you put an x pipe or h pipe in place of the resonator? Does it sound raspy WOT

Also, did you disable the flap? When you're in sport + the OEM flap in the muffler never stays fully open, even in WOT maybe it's that

Oh no, definitely not engine: the car runs as strong as a million horses. Some muffler shop just cut the resonator and welded 2 small pipes (the length of the resonator) I think H-like setup. I drive in sport or sport+ all the time and flaps are fully open. At rare times that I do drive in efficient mode, the sound is quieter as intended so definitely no flap related issue.

The flap is not always open in sport plus when driving around unless you have disabled it by unplugging/coding yourself

Hmmm that is news to me. I can hear the flaps are open because as soon as I go in sport or sport+, there is a significant sound increase (night and day difference).

I believe when you are driving normally in sport plus they'll close at higher gears. If you give it some throttle they open back up. This has been my experience with it I could be wrong

Try removing the Valve Actuators from the muffler. Make sure when you remove them, the valves are open. Doing this should completely disable the valves not allowing them to close. See if that fixes the issue.

If more folks confirm this is true, then this may be the explanation for my "issue".

I recently discovered this as well. I had a single mid pipe installed and was wondering why it was louder in 1st and 2nd gear and then quieter in 3rd gear and up. Turns out the valves close when you hit 3rd gear unless you give it lots of throttle like others have said. I ended up unplugging my flaps again so that I get the same tone throughout.

Nope, unplugging the flaps takes a few minutes and can be reversed by just plugging them back in.

I've got no experience in this so excuse me if my question sounds newbie: with the flaps unplugged, how does the exhaust sound in efficient mode? loud, same as in sport & sport + ?

No problem. Yes, if you unplug the flaps after being in sport plus and making sure they are open and turning off the car, they will never close.

Personally, I could never give up the flexibility of valves. For those that don't want to lose that function, keep a wireless OBD adapter always plugged in and use the Bimmerlink app. I use a Veepeak bluetooth adapter since my phone connects through wifi to carplay; wouldn't be able to connect to carplay and a WiFi adapter like THOR at the same time.

I'd say for the majority of the time I leave the valves in auto so it's open in the first few gears but unless you're on it it'll close back up when cruising at higher speeds. But if I ever want full valve open action I just open the app and toggle the valves for more sound!

I unplugged the valve modules, electrical taped them, zip tied it not to hang and love the sound. Also unplugged the ASD module to get rid of the fake noise. You get a nice tone just cruising around in efficient without burbles annoying you.

To this day I do not understand the point of ASD. There’s actually a really nice and angry sounding BMW I6 induction note under that layer of ASD.
