What is this sound?!
I hear only after cold starts, and coming off throttle to a stop, never on throttle as I tested. After the car is warmed up, I don't hear it anymore after that. Mainly after starting the car snd driving for the first 5-10 minutes. Not sure if it's a belt or exhaust leak, etc.

long shot, but the tin brake shield rubbing or rattling?
The famous rock between the brake and brake guard? Sounds like rubbing that has to do with rotation.... josh Last edited by spidy512; 01-17-2023 at 10:36 AM.. |

I checked from rocks, and nada. I don't hear scraping, that's the difference. I only hear it on load (drive or manual via dct) and never on neutral. I was thinking it might br a rock or even the driveshaft rubbing against the heatshield due to pressing it in tight spots for my MAD midpipe. My diff is already making noises and needs to be replaced soon. I'll check again for rocks. It's really loud and some have described to sound like a "flux capacitator", lol. It's pretty embarrasing. It's
either: 1) rocks between the hear shield 2) driveshaft rubbing 3) rear diff 4) right rear drive axle 5) center support brqce for driveshaft failing 6) Caliper Will check it out with a friend ir stop by the indy |

In checked this afternoon. I didn't feel the need to bend it, but I did knock on it with a mallet and screw driver and didn't hear anything. Pressed against it with my hand and nothing came out. I have a 17' so it has the updated heat shields.

It has an audible whining sound, some kind of gear whine that's gotten much louder over time. With music I can easily ignore it, but I don't want it to fail. It was recommended by BMW to replace it, but it hasn't affected performance. I wonder if it's been contributing to the new sound I've been hearing. I've heard nothing like it on the forums or even on social media.

Did you ever figure out what this was? I have a sound that seems similar to what you described.

Yes, somehow, and I think after BMW inspected my driveshaft, they put the hear shield back on without properly fitting it and it (driveshaft) was rubbing against the heatshield. My buddy and I took a scope and looked between the heatshield and driveshaft and my suspicion was correct. I ended up taking it off and molding it to leave more room between the driveshaft and heatshield. I also replaced my rear diff with a used one, and no more weird noises, just the whine from upgraded bushings and diff brace.
