Found my Differential to be leaking :(
So this past weekend I was installing my Remus mid-pipes (which I love by the way). When I was removing and reinstalling my exhaust I noticed that the differential has a class two leak, meaning there is no droplets forming/present. However, you can see fluid. It appears to be seeping where the passengers drive shaft meets the diff.
I will post photos today when I get back under the replace an exhaust hanger. I will be stopping by the dealer to talk to my SA today and will update with what they say. I literally just picked up my car from my service after they replaced my strut mounts/bearings last week. Luckily, I am on warranty still. Any one ever has a similar issue, gets me nervous seeing how our M active diffs are serious pieces of complex engineering. |

Supposedly its the same diff as the M5/M6. It should be stout.
Also, I thought mine had a leak in the same location. It turned it to be extra fluid that had come out of the breather on top of the diff housing. Worth looking. |

I would clean it up, and check the fluid level..
Check to make sure it is not overfilled, open the fill screw and let any extra fluid leak out. Do this on a level surface or on a lift.

Wow, so I need to pay my indy shop to check for leaks (ala pre-purchase inspection) on oil pan gasket, OFH, vavle cover gasket and rear diff on the last year of warranty

Ya I am hoping that this will be the case. Pain in the butt though doing it with the car just on jack stands.

Only for the M2, M3 and M4. x-referencing the part number reveals this much.

looks like i joined the club today. noticed a small pool of oil on the ground of my parking stall. called my service advisor and he put me up on the first free hoist in the shop and... passenger side seal had failed and was leaking/dripping fluid.
is this common? is it a lengthy repair job? it's under warranty but i have to wait for a service loaner so it could be awhile for it to get fixed... Last edited by fabulousprofound; 10-26-2018 at 12:47 PM.. |

the axle was flinging the oil leaking from the seal all over the place so the drip pattern on the ground was confusing as hell to diagnose without the car coming off the ground... |

well things went from bad to worse for me. came out after work to see this...
service dept. still has no loaners to give out. they said if i want this done asap i need to leave the car with them and go to the local car rental to get something to drive while it gets repaired. Last edited by fabulousprofound; 11-06-2018 at 04:18 PM.. |

i finally got my seal fixed under warranty, although the service tech initially said no because my car is lowered about an inch on KW HAS coilovers and wanted to blame the leak on that. Thankfully my SA came to my defense and it was finally approved and replaced.
But the left seal... should I be worried? Do these things fail in pairs? So far what little I could find online seems to be only the right seal that goes bad. Last edited by fabulousprofound; 11-28-2018 at 07:13 PM.. |

Add me to the club, just had this fixed. Wasn't dripping or anything so they just replaced the seal. Took them 2 days to keep the car, sure it wasn't that long just probably did mine when they had time.
They did not replace or flush any fluids.. just swapped seals and back it went. |
