How long for an M car to sell?
I know there are many variables like model year, miles, spec, and condition.
But just curious how long it is generally taking people to complete a sale on this forum? Is this the best place to sell the car? Other options like car max, or eBay better? Any info much appreciated. I've got a 2018 M4 6MT comp I'm thinking about moving on from.

forums, facebook marketplace, autotrader.
ebay isn't worth it cars and bids / bring a trailer mostly caters to older BMWs. they go crazy for e46 and e92s... not so much for f8x cars. that crowd probably isn't worth your time with the million questions they'll ask about service history, crankhub, underbody pics, etc not sure how long it will take to sell. if you have a fair price it shouldn't take more than 1-2 months

I've sold 4 cars personally and private party is always the best for getting the most. All you need to do is take a lot of photos, write a good description, and most importantly price it well. After that just list it everywhere... craigslist, fb, forums, etc. Youll get a lot of lowballers but youll also get the most $

Facebook marketplace had the most response by far of any car listing last time I sold. The issue with a lot of the more commercial oriented ones is that they all compare your car to some theoretical value and score it on market value. If you have anything rare or unusual the system works against you by deranking your ad. For something like an M there are a ton of facebook groups you can post in. Forums are okay if you are looking to sell something highly modded but they just don't get enough traffic.

Private sales can be the most money but it can take a while. I went through the process in 2019-2020. I listed it for private sale and man-oh-man was that a time waster… I know legitimate sellers are out there, obviously, but the amount of BS I had to sift through was alarming. In the end I just sold the car to Carmax because I literally had a 2015 M4 and a 2018 M4*** simultaneously for almost 8 months. I got frustrated with the process because at a certain point (around the 6 month mark) it just felt silly to be holding on to an extra car that I didn't even drive.
Admittedly, I had a three month window in my mind but things just went on forever. For context, the car was appropriately priced: I listed for $38k for a 2015 6MT Base car with literally every DINAN product offered (except the wheels), no collisions, 44k miles (iirc), and title in hand. I sold to carmax for $46k because the whole car market turned upside down out of nowhere but I still think my listing price was reasonable/generous on my part - they ultimately sold the car for $51k in less than a week. ***The 2018 ZCP was really hard to find so I pulled to trigger to not miss out on my perfect spec (mineral white, 6MT, with less than 9k miles, and CPO)

BaT actually hasn't been that bad for 6MT F8X cars past few months. A lot of F8X cars lately but many RNM though they are ordinary well optioned DCT cars and still a little inflated pricing on the reserve.
A 6MT car that hasnt been heavily modified should be an easy sell anywhere.

So I was able to get into an F80 because I sold my F30 340i via FB marketplace. I purchased the car for 19k back in May 2021, between engine work (warranty claims) and modifications I had around 7k invested in it. I sold it for 30k back in May 2022. It would have been impossible to get that price if I didn't do a private sell. I think I had it listed for 3-4 months before I finally had a serious buyer who payed in cash in front of my local bank. Like everyone else said, post a highly detailed description listing every feature, maintenance records, carfax, high quality photos from every angle, etc. Be honest and respectful to potential buyers and it will sell. If you post on the high end, it will take longer. Just don't back down from what your goal is money wise.

BaT has one right now. You could watch it to see what it does:
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2018-bmw-m3-10/ One issue with listing on Bat (that I've heard, I haven't tried) is that there is a lengthy wait period to list. 6+ weeks, the last I heard. The market can change significantly in that time. I agree with another poster that said just list it everywhere. FB, CarGurus, forums, etc. Post your specs here, maybe someone will be interested. What are you trying to get in price? Edit: My bad, I didn't see it's an M4. Most of the advice still applies, except for that auction of the M3.

I just went through a painful time trying to sell my car and sold my M4 to the dealer...
It was beautifully specc'd, 2020 manual, individual Le Mans blue, competition, executive 14k miles, and I really wanted it to go to an enthusiast. I had it up for sale for a while, priced below KBB and no bites.. I even started to offer it at the dealer trade in price and the few people interested would actually offer me below what the dealer was giving me. I had it scheduled to go up for auction on BAT, but after seeing quite a few RNM, it was the last straw. The reserve they gave me was 58K, which was also below what some dealers were offering. Looking through BAT, they like the M3 much more than the M4. Ultimately, I decided I would have to make a decision I wasn't happy with, and sold it to the dealer in order to secure the sale before prices came down any further. I think it really depends on your spec. If you have an expensive version of the F8x, it will take quite a while.. If you have a low or middle of the road spec, you will find buyers but you may have to discount significantly. If it's an M4, it will take much longer than an M3. I found that people don't really care much for the M4, and many comments I received were "Too bad it's not an M3" Also, oddly, I had many people say "Too bad it's not a DCT"- which threw me for quite the loop... I have never heard people prefer the automatic version of a car. But for the price range my car was in, the clientele was definitely older gentlemen, of which many prefer the DCT. Wish you best of luck in the sale.. Perhaps wait until winter is over? Maybe that will help, unless the market tanks even further, which I felt that it will |

I sold my 2015 F80 back in October or so within two weeks on Autotrader. It had a lot of high quality parts on it however and miles weren't terrible (62kish or so). I also had it priced very competitively so it went quick.
If you list on Autotrader however, get prepared for a ton of degenerates attempting to scam you. My advice would be to not respond to people right away. If they really want the car, they'll follow up again. The scammers will move on. I utilized this approach on Autotrader and it worked well. I also posted on this site, but got a ton of low ballers who wanted me to "do them a favor" and knock money off what was already a low price. Pretty annoying but is what it is. Good luck, but better to just keep that beauty! |

I'd love to keep her. She has been my dream car and I haven't been disappointed. BUT, I'm making some babies and my wife can't drive stick. It's time to let her go and get an SUV. Hopefully one with some performance. (X3 M40i)

I usually trade in and worked deals I was happy with, last time I sold a car PP the guy tried to renegotiate when bringing the check and picking it up! I was not budging and then he tried to get me to throw in a nice set of additional rims for free or super cheap. If he didn't stop I was going to send him packing even if he accepted original deal, actually it was his b!tch GF mostly putting all the ideas in his head of getting a better deal cause the title took longer to show up from BMW than expected which I paid off w/o his funds.
