Front brake steel rotors damaged after Trackday
Hi! First of all, I been reading some info related to my issue but I'm not sure that was the same problem. After my first track day with my 10k miles M4 (I'm already Trackday a 330i G20) my front rotors have some affected areas, they're not smooth like before, actually the rotors are a little bit scratched.
Note: I'm using stock OEM brake pads and the wear of these was notable, generating dust all over the wheel. I drive 20 laps, about 60 miles in the Trackday. Read rotors are ok, in a very similar condition than before the Trackday. It's that normal and will comeback to a better condition with some daily use or I should worry about that? I read about uneven brake pads deposits but I'm not sure if is this the case. Thanks in advance for your help, I really appreciate it. A picture of the front rotor it's attached. |

I ran into the exact same thing with my stock brakes after a track day. Those dull patches on your brake disc are brake pad deposits. You can use a brake rotor hone on a drill to remove the deposits. Or throw on a set of track pads and let them clean off your discs. My deposits were so bad I had a wicked brake vibration and thought my discs were warped. After the brake hone they were 75% better, and after a few days of driving on track pads, they were back to normal.

Dedicated track pads are a good idea. I heard an instructor yesterday say the best bang for your buck on any car is a brake ducting system.

Thanks for your answers. Now I'm looking for some ferodo racing brake pads for track use. I'm reading about DS2500 or DS1.11 in other topics. I hope can I get these here in Argentina.

I had the same with mine on OEM pads, a few days of cold braking and it cleared the deposits. Thought i had toasted them rotors but seem fine after about 3000kms since.

I’m running the ds1:11 pads for my track days, front and rear, with Castrol SRF brake fluid. They work very well on track, but are very noisy on the street. I have heard really good things about the PFC11 brake pads.

I had pad deposits too after tracking. I just drove for about a week and it got 90% better. You just have to work it off.

The DS1.11 on the other hand... proper track pad. You can also buy M performance track pads from BMW, they're a Pagid made pad I believe. With enough patience you could probably even sand the deposits off your rotors. I did it by hand on mind, wasn't fun, and took a while, but it seemed to help... but by far not the most efficient or effective method They will slowly smooth out from regular driving too. A brake bedding session might help a bit but don't keep doing it over and over if it doesn't work the first time. |
