Blown motor options

I recently blew the motor in my M4 and i'm trying to decide if i want to either put a used or built one in. It's a gutted track car that never sees the street and gets around 20 tracks days a year on it.

Carbahn Autoworks built motor seems like a decent option, has anyone gone this route or have experience with them?

I was at Watkins Glen and it blew at the end of the straight before the boot. I haven't had time to fully diagnose why it happened but there's a chunk missing out of the piston in cylinder #4.

Oil temps were 215 and there were no warning signs before it happened. Car is fbo with Pure turbos, 85k miles and around 50 track days with it.

If you're not going to put a used OEM engine and want to get an improved one, I would trust Carbahn.

They provide a 2 year warranty and actually stand behind it, ask me how I know.

If you're missing a chunk of a piston that sounds like predetonation to me

How do you know? I'm genuinely curious because Dinan appeared to be hit or miss when it came to warranty.

If my motor ever fails, Carbahn is probably the route I'll take.

That's awesome to hear that they stand by their warranty, i've heard of a lot of other companies where that's not the case. I'm leaning towards them as of now but i need figure out if my core is still useable.

Once i get time to pull the motor i'll look into exactly what caused it, i have a feeling it might have been a clogged injector.

I also need

Built an engine with them which blew up almost immediately. Sent it back, they disassembled and determined it was an assembly error, then sent me a new engine a month later.
I was still out the uninstall/install cost, but the blown engine took out the block, crank, rods, pistons. Lots of cost on their end.

Steve is a gentleman. Dealing with Chris is more misses than hits, but I guess it's the price to pay.

I am not in a hurry to build any more engines, but if I build another it'll be with Carbahn

Thanks for the background. Definitely sounds like a fair outcome.

For solid track duty I'd take the Carbahn motor since it has a warranty. The hard part is you probably need to eat some core charge if parts your current motor can't be reused (hard to see if wall scored in that pic). They would want something that can be rebuilt without repairing, or they charge you for a new block/head/crank…

That being said, if the broken motor makes Carbahn a non-option then a good builder can get you straightened out too. The decision would be to buy new block/head/crank/etc and reuse what you can…or what do you want to add?

If I've learned anything from BP, it's: stay very far away from Ghassan

OP, do yourself a favor and get in touch with Billiam Mason. He goes by https://instagram.com/b_mase_monkey on IG or you can email him at info@bmbautowerks.com

Another recommendation would be Ali Barakat if Billiam isn't able to take on your project -- https://instagram.com/al1zilla

The rest are:
RPM Engines (Santa Rosa, CA)
Tyspeed (New Jersey)
Lang Racing (SoCal)
Miami Engines if you don't need a fancy build

+1 for Billy at BMB. He's working my built motor now.

How much does a built motor generally run? Not planning on it just curious how much people are spending. Thanks

Parts and assembly excluding engine R&R and engine block core:

$8-10k for a standard bottom end build (pistons, rods, rod bearings, head studs, crank hub)

$12-$14k for bottom end + Stage 3 cylinder head

$15-$17k for bottom end + Stage 3 cylinder head + welded spark plug inserts

$20k+ for everything else + engine block sleeving

Engine R&R ranges from $3k to $6k depending on location, and how meticulous the shop is with the installation process.

I have always know VAC Motorsports to be one of the premier engine builders for BMW engines. Should definitely look into them. They have been around forever and always done high quality builds.

https://store.vacmotorsports.com/bmw...s55-p2390.aspx

If it were my car, though, I would probably drop an LT4 vette engine in it.

Hasn't been done yet on an F80 to my knowledge.

Someone did do the swap into a E92, though and it is amazing!
