Stock F80 - no power mods! Does it need crank hub fix!?
Hi everyone! I’m guessing this has been debated a lot before but want to just gather your opinions and hopefully also personal experiences on this issue please. Is it that common? I’m planning to keep my car standard, not even sure if it will ever see a track… I know that from reading the internet some people say it failed also on stock engines…but how common are these failures really if you maintain it stock and maybe don’t rag it like an idiot when it’s cold maybe? Car has one year warranty but I’m thinking is this something I want to do now, after the warranty expires or not at all even?
I have a friend who is a mechanic at BMW who tells me this is not an issue at all if the car stays stock. Thoughts? Thanks in advance. |

Your guess is right… this has been debated before. You WILL NOT find an definitive answer here nor anywhere else you search.
People will say both so in the end, do what makes sense for you. Unless BMW sends out a campaign, you’re on your own. |

Think about it like this: Car accidents happen, does that mean we should stop driving? No. taking care on the road should help.
In the same way, if you treat your car with some respect, the crank-hub MAY only be rumour. |

There are BMWs to worry about in regards to reliability.
The F8x are not one of them. In over four years of ownership over three models, the only issue I've experienced is a leaking diff seal fixed under warranty (which certainly could have been due to slamming the car in the first place). More enjoyment of the car, less worry. |

If you see what's involved in the labor one can argue the amount of risk for things to go wrong almost seems higher than the CH failure itself. But that's just me.

My n54 spun a hub on a stock motor and tune, no upgrades. I've done about 10k on my m4 with bolt ons and no issues. Just how you drive it and luck of the draw when we're talking stock levels. I would recommend as part of a rebuild when you start pushing beyond stock turbo limitations.

For piece of mind I got the crank bolt capture installed. $100 part and $250 labor to install. Haven’t seen too many posts about spinning with a CBC at stock or stage 1 levels. Just added piece of mind for me that maybe it does help so I run stage 1 tune all year no worries.

Most people who spun the crankhub is repairable. The repair is like 5-6K or something. Why put 5-6k in it now if it's not broken? lol Unless you want to weigh the odds and hope you're not that one in a million and destroy the engine lol.

I’ve only driven the car for 400miles but I still don’t understand why would someone want even more power on it…the power is already hard to put down, still spins in 4th!? Although the roads are usually very moist in the north of England! Stock is more than fine!

Neither of those mods/flashes will change the torque curve or engine response, rather they will improve contact with the road and help with applying the power in lateral throttle situations. The effect may come across as smoother in the sense that you've got more confidence. If you want to keep OE suspension components post-warranty, then CS suspension is the way to go IMO.

It seems that the Crunk Hub is the only reasonable option ... the CBC itself does not do much, however ... this assumption is probably the Plecabo effect
in this video, this guy explains what's going on |
