In March, it was decided to cease F80 production for all markets except US/CAN effective last week and WLTP/RDE Certifation was no longer necessary. It was stated they would not be installing the steel shaft on F80 due to the 8 figure cost to re-certify the type.
Sadly, this seems to echo with a conversation I just had today with a BMW Genius.

I have a July F80 production sitting in Bremerhaven at the moment and called-in concerned about the possible lack of a CF drive shaft. The Genius quickly knew why I was asking and confirmed that as of March 1, the F80 would almost certainly has a Steel driveshaft. Reason he said "almost certainly" was because a few CF driveshafts trickled in during early March builds.

Regardless, I'm taking my conversation with the Genius as truth that as of March 1, 2018 the F80 M3 will have a Steel driveshaft.

And another reason why I am glad I picked up a CPO 17 F80. Wife got luck with her MY18 as it was built in July of last year.

If you’ve never had it, you won’t miss it. If you’ve had it, you won’t miss it either! No worries.

Well...unfortunately...they forgot to check. I should have the car soon and I'll try to look myself. Sorry fellas, I'm just as curious as you all are.

Would it be safe to assume an August build will have a steelshaft?

Any pictures of this mythical steel shaft with a center bearing? Also, any pictures of the exhaust with the particulate filter?

Does that mean you also have the euro particulate filter (which was the reason for getting shafted) fitted somewhere in your exhaust? If so, I wonder if your exhaust sounds any different than the carbon shaft cars.

Prolly not, I was surprised since the US bound cars were not supposed to get the filters hence me thinking no steel drive shaft.

I would not assume anything but I would guess an August build would have the steel driveshaft.

I guess, I am confused and annoyed for you and possible me with a new order. Following this, I did not think the US cars would get a steel shaft and nobody had up until recently, now people are spotting them on their cars.

But, the original reason “supposedly” was for a filter system that NA cars do not need, so why would a US car get the steelshaft?

Thanks for documenting your situation for the rest of the members

Same here. I have a F80 July18 build that's on the boat currently and I was also under the impression it would have the carbon shaft.

I want to see a picture of a NA car with a steel shaft and particulate filter. Does anyone have one? Those of you that have the steel shaft, was this just told to you by the dealer/service department or have you actually looked past the heat shield and seen a two piece steel shaft with the bearing in the middle?

My Car is on the boat.....Fuggggggg

Being that carbon fiber vs steel drive shaft has to be a HUGE cost savings for BMW I feel like they should offer us something

I guess it was well documented....Im sure most will never know the difference. Wonder what the weight difference is and if they updated the curb weight to reflect the steel vs carbon

I don't think we have any recourse in this. There is no documentation that I have that has a mention of my car having a CF driveshaft.

I am not really worried though. The car is fantastic, it rides and performs great BUT it is a 3500 dollar part that was supposed to be in the car that is now not in it.
