Winter Tires - Be Careful

9 hours into 2019 and I got into a single car accident. Just a friendly reminder to be very careful on the roads once you go from low profile 20" tires that make the car feel invincible to something smaller. I have 255/40 LM-32's mounted on 513M rims and I have used them for 3 seasons now. The rears were due to be rotated to the fronts tomorrow and are still well above the wear bars but had ~2/32" less tread than the fronts.

Driving home from work yesterday morning with a slight mist on the roads, coming over a ramp with a slight turn and a bumpy road that popped the car up a bit and probably an inopportune application of the throttle. The front tires wanted to grip and the rears didn't want to hang on. Car went into a vicious slide that it tried to correct and swerved back and forth until the front end crashed into the barrier. By some miracle it just looks like bumper and hood along with the oil cooler and all the internals right behind the bumper. Wasn't even going that fast...maybe 30-35MPH which was the recommended speed for the ramp.

Hoping for a better rest of 2019. Just a reminder that these cars are no joke and don't play around with mismatched tire tread depths. Safe driving out there!

Edit: Forgot to add the temperature was in the high 50's which turns the winter tires into a greasy feeling mess.

Thanks!
Glad you’re ok.

Sliding the tail in my 255 winters is awesome! But I do agree about limited grip. Gotta be careful. Although 255 snows have more grip than 305 summer rears. Ask me how I know

Sorry to hear glad your okay.

I have a brand new set of
Continental Conti extreme contact all season DWS 06

I have and older GTI as a daily driver but
I'm curious to see how the DWS 06's work on the M3. I'm running the OEM 18's

Sorry to hear, that sucks. You say the recommended speed for the ramp is 35 mph, but I’m sure that doesn’t mean in adverse conditions. These cars do ok with snow tires on snow/ice but I really drive conservatively whenever the conditions are less than ideal. Hope your car gets fixed and you can move in, good luck

.
that's too bad but it sounds more like classic rwd ramp accident and it wouldn't make a difference even if you rotated them on time. Tread depth makes a difference mostly in snow. Greasy pavement with temperature change is pretty much the same as black ice and if you're not driving in straight line there's usually not enough of room for recovery.

I am running a winter performance tire Michelin Alpin PA4 vs. the Blizzak snow tire you experienced the issues with. Even with a performance tire, it feels very loose in corners. I can't even image the looseness with a pure winter tire. Glad you are ok and hopefully the damage is minimal.

Sorry to hear about that and thanks for the warning!

I have the same tires, they're not good in the rain. Heck, it feels really unstable at highway speed in heavy rains.

Thanks for the tip. I go on a sharp on ramp every morning for work. I'll be conscious to be more careful, especially when the ground is slick.
