BMS Oil Catch Can S55 Results (5,000 miles)

BMS Oil Catch Can installed at roughly 11,000 miles on a 2018 F83 ZCP 6MT.

Results at 16,000 miles after one cross country from CA to TX in 119 deg heat and one oil change.

You be the judge. I'm happy it's in there.

I had one installed on my N54 2009 E93, and it
Paid for itself in black gold. S55 is definitely an improvement

Something is better than nothing and certainly better than having that crud circulating back into the engine.

I'm just used to seeing the catch can on my V8 HEMI being at least a 1/3 full every 5K oil change.

I have one of these sitting in the box waiting to be installed, but I am unsure on if I'm going to install it. Do you think I'd have issues in subfreezing temperatures and having the liquid inside the container freeze?

Proximity to the engine, anything that freezes at the bottom will melt. Still won’t impede air flow

Its only an issue if the can gets full and blocks the airways. So just remember to drain the can. Do it every oil change.

I had a Mishimoto one installed about 500 miles ago. Definitely don't want this stuff going back in.

I did the walnut blasting on the intake valves of my N26 when I had it. It had 75k miles. I got the intake open and I was kinda mad that I did all the work. There was almost no buildup. I don't think these engines need catch cans.

At 100,000 on my E93 N54 motor. Did a chemical blasting, drove after like the day it was built...
My oil catch can on that car caught about 3mm of oil level every year (17,000 miles).
And from what I found after 5000 miles on the S55 (mix of water and oil), I'm glad its installed for the long haul.

From what I understand, yes, the N54's needed this service often. I think these newer generations need this service far less frequently.

I dont think you can assume all S55 engines will have the same behavior. I think driving habits, engine temp, driving times, climate, etc can lead to different experiences.

Kinda like how some people burn oil and others dont lose a single drop between oil changes. For me, its cheap insurance. It was sub $200 i think. Its like the ppl that change their oil every 3K miles, they could probably go to 5K but whatever...

Honestly that doesn't look like much in the catch can.

Makes sense! I will just install it and see what happens. My commute is 4 miles each way, so im sure ill be getting some water in the can.

I installed a bunch of stuff way back when and decided to throw on the OCC for S&Gs, since the area would be exposed anyway during the teardown. Took the time to rig up a valve and drain tube out the passenger wheel well, which is super nice given the tight spot of the OCC mounting.

Emptied it for the first time (roughly 6 months, 20k miles) over the weekend while installing the Mishi IC and heat exchanger. Drained out about 10mL of watery golden crap. Maybe it helps, maybe not. But seems like it's at least doing something, so I'm ok with it.

I want to replicate your similar setup for a quick drain, what did you use by chance?

I bought the Turner setup and it comes with all the necessary parts to hook up a drain tube.

+1 to OP for posting. For $150-300 it's good to keep any crud out. I installed a Turner OCC a year ago and have a similar amount of catch. It's good to see it does it's job, and also that the S55 doesn't produce excessive vapor.

I started off with the Turner kit. Had to get some pieces from local hardware store to get all the fittings from the bottom of the BMS catch can installed cleanly. Then ran rubber tubing down along the radiator fan shroud and out the wheel well, with a simple on/off in-line valve to keep it from leaking all over the garage between drainings.

The Turner S55 kit includes the drain kit with fittings, hose and inline shutoff. They also include both silicone hoses and needed clamps. Nice kit. I ran the drain line down to near the oil drain plug area, and the shutoff valve hides mid-way protected behind the plastic wheel opening shroud. Turn the wheel and stick fingers behind to open/close.

If you have OCD the top hoses can be hand trimmed to line up exactly right, but they hide under the carbon fiber brace anyway...
