The M5 will be very different and you may like it but you may not. Recently I thought I wanted an M5 and I did two test drives and then spent a weekend with one (thanks to a generous buddy). I concluded I did not want an M5. It's not like a bigger, faster M3 - it's more like a stiffer, faster 535. Some folks like it, some don't. Pat P.S. I just saw you are getting a 2015 GT3. In that case, why bother with either an M5 or an M4? |

My 2c, get the car you like to drive the most not the car that is the best "deal". 3 years is a long time to second guess your choice.
Which one would I personally not get? Hint: +1000 lbs ( typical weight of a grand piano ). Is that Santorini blue? |

If the M5 wasn't a boring-ass luxo-barge built on the same chassis as the 7 series I would say GO FOR IT. The M5 is going to be so much faster than an M4 it is going to be a running joke on these forums for years, just as the last generation.

Rule of thumb: NEVER buy first model year cars!
No one cares about the COOL factor of owning a first model year car. As a matter of fact, most people will question why you didn't wait until at least the second or third model year. Don't be that guy!

If the M3/M4 delivers a driving experience like the e9x M3, don't know how it cannot cannibalize M5/6 sales, as the rear seating has considerably more room now and interior looks nicer.

If you are considering the M4 COUPE why not the M6 coupe? I went from an E92 M3 to M6 coupe. While the M6 is heavy, it doesn't feel like it and you still get a V8 motor.
The interior is where the M6 really shines though. It appears though the M4 interior will be just as nice with the right options. |

When looking at pictures, I didn't realize just how huge this car is. It's way too large for a coupe. |

Here is where I am, 2013 M5 with 5k miles is going for 80k now... New m3/m4 will be mid 70s. I am thinking of getting a used M5 and then wait for tr M3 pricing to get better in a few years.

once you break the $100k threshold, you have to weigh in other cars that make it extremely difficult to justify an M5. Me personally, if it were my money I'd get used Ferrari F430 Scuderia, or 991

1) how is upkeep a nightmare compared to the current m3 or even the new m3? they both eat tires and brakes, and they both have those items covered under the normal maintenance warranty. the m5 also gets better gas mileage than the e9x m3. Also, the m3 and prior gen m5 had constant spark plug change intervals, diff fluids, etc to worry about. 2) The prior gen m5 has relatively bad value on the open market because of the issues with SMG and to a slightly lesser degree, the s85. Even then, neither then m5 or the m3 are the pinnacle of resale values. That said, the m5 does seem to be sinking in value quickly, and used prices are attractive. 3) Your trade in "comparison" is also meaningless. If you have a 2011, its impossible for the m5 to be of the same year. Also, whats the mileage between the two cars? Did you get a trade in quote from the same place? Did he have any wrecks? Whats the service history? IE the comparison is NOT apples to apples and proves little to nothing. 4) BMW actually priced the f10 m5 nearly exactly the same as the prior e60 m5. So not sure what you mean by "increased pricing" The used prices are attractive on the m5, but it just depends on whether you are looking for a big cruiser or a sportier car you can take to the track. For just day to day cruising and highway trips, I think the big torque and extremely nice interior of the m5 combined with the attractive pricing on 2013 models makes it a compelling option.

I think leasing is the way to go, these cars lose value very quickly and best way not to be stuck with a car... Yes all cars are a bad investment but I don't keep cars more than 3 to 4 years. The problem is I can lease a used m5... At 80k, what will be the price of a 2013 M5 if I decided to sell it and buy a used 2015 M3? I guess we all can't have our cake and eat it too lol

M5 or M4
It really depends how patient you really are. Unfortunately, the M5 really let a lot of people down...you can see that from the pitiful sales numbers. And the competition package is a joke...heavier non-forged wheels? Really?
I think as shown in a previous thread that the M4 won't be as popular as people think...the M3 will be the hot item at the dealership. If you can wait until August, I am certain you can get an M4 for $1000 over invoice and lease it for mid $900s a month. TBH, I think you'll probably like your 2011 more than the M4 at the end of the day. The M5 isn't exciting to anybody anymore...its a fat turd that should have an AMG badge on the back of it. Its a cool car, dont get me wrong, but it just shows the Benzifying that BMW has been doing for the past 5 years. Wow, cool its fast on the freeway...but a 2001 M3 will smoke your ass on a track. Wait til August if you want a new M deal. The M4 will be just like the M5/6 and age 150 days on showroom. Quote:
