E90 335i -> F80

I have a 2008 335 right now, and I'm thinking of ordering a new M3.

Can anyone comment on the ride comfort-quality between the two? The 335 has the sport package, and is still on RFT. How would that compare to the F80 with the adaptive suspension in comfort on 19" wheels.

The car is going to be my DD, about 30 minutes each way commute. I want to make sure the F80 is comfortable enough (the 335 was). I got to drive the F83 briefly at my local, and it seemed comparable, but if someone else has much more experience, I would love opinions.

I came from an E46 M3, to a 2009 335i(sport package) to the F80. I personally feel the F80 is the best suspended of the other two. It isn't harsh, which I felt the 335i could be at times. Even in sport+ I feel the F80 just feels less harsh than my 335 did.
Sometimes I wonder if the previous owner of my 335 had dropped the car because I always got people asking me if it was at stock height. I guess if it was dropped that would explain why it felt harsh to me. I was not on run flats either.

All in all the F80 will feel better to you in with the adaptive.

The only thing I wish the F80 had was leg extender seats like my 335i. Otherwise I find the F80 to be more comfortable than my old 335i. My F80 is on the passive suspension running on 18s. Not a bad ride at all with this setup. I assume adaptive with 18s would make it even smoother

I had an '08 335i and '11 335i msport.. greatly prefer the f80 in all aspects.. only thing is it feels a little larger overall. nice in some ways. I don't miss the crumb trap thigh extenders.

the car will be just fine as a daily cruiser for you. if you feel it's stiffer, it won't be enough yo upset you. you definitely feel seams in the road etc but that's part of having a performance focused car. it's not plush. I've had both the adaptive and passive suspensions.. neither is harsh, but they aren't what most would refer to as a plush/soft ride either.

it's all very subjective, though, so take a longer test drive if you're concerned. good luck!

I had a 2010 E92 335i M-Sport. I loved it. My M4 has a lot more of everything I loved about my 335i, more power, more torque, better handling, a better 6MT, and that beautiful Sakhir Orange exterior and full leather interior.

If you like your 335i, you'll LOVE the F80 M3 or F82 M4!

Came from a 2007 335 sport on runflats to my f80. It's a bit strange because the f80 on 19s in comfort is still firmer than the 335... BUT you know how if you hit a big bump or pothole in the 335 it is bone jarring and you begin to like clench your teeth in anticipation anytime you get close to a bigger bump? That goes away almost completely.
I would say honestly that it isn't as comfortable of a daily commuter as what you are coming from but you will enjoy that commute more than you ever have.

my daily driver is a 08 E90 (I have owned it since 2011 June) and I also own a 15 M3 with adaptive suspension and 19s. To me, the comfort of F80 is in another league. Although, it feels stiffer it also feels more comfortable. I am not even sure if what I just wrote make sense. F80 would be a great daily driver.

My 08 E90 335 on runflats was harsher than my f80 on 18s for sure. Most easily noticed on rougher roads.

Kind of unfair to compare anything to Crapflats... so if u had an E90 and you never took them off, then you never really took full advantage of the car, neither in traction or comfort. I can assure you a 335 on non runflats w sport pack is a more comfortable car than an F80... but either way, if you are looking for a certain level of comfort... not this type of car.

No, in fact I've never even driven an F80. This is all just based on what I've read on this forum and the online articles.

I had a 08 335xi and 2011, the ride quality is on par with my f82. f82 might be a tick harsher but nothing you'll regret

Getting the adaptive suspension for $1000 is the first and best option you should check.

Thanks for the comments, sounds like the F80 will do me just fine. I actually already ordered it so I was hoping that was going to be the answer. I made sure I checked the adaptive suspension box!

Why exactly are you responding then?

You are wrong.

I had an E90 briefly. My take is this: The E90 was, overall, more comfortable, but way more numb. You have very little feel, then on the huge bumps it can get a bit jarring. The reduced road noise also contributed to the comfort. For the F8X, I'd say it's almost as 'comfortable' in comfort setting, but still much more communicative. It's not nearly as numb. I believe this has to do with the overall dynamics of the suspension and chassis. The F8X is NOT uncomfortable or jarring, like, say, a Lotus. Hell, it's not uncomfortable at all. Best of both worlds, IMO.

When thinking back on my E90 335i....you will definitely be upgrading. Ride quality is far better as you're moving away from RFTs and you will experience less crash over bumps, especially in comfort mode with the adjustable suspension. You will also have new updated tech that eclipses the E90 such as back up camera, HUD, side view cameras, better iDrive, etc.

Performance wise, the S55 is loads more powerful than the N54 stock. The N54 was a great engine minus the HPFP issue and injector issues. The S55 behaves similarly but doesn't drastically loose power close to the redline like the N54. It pulls until 7600 RPM.

Only thing is better in the older model is the steering feel. You get that old "hefty" BMW hydraulic feel in the E90. The F80's steering will definitely feel much lighter, albeit, much more accurate and quicker off center. Even more so than the E90 M3.

I had a '08 335xi before the F80. The only three things I miss are:

1) The steering. The hydraulic rack in the E90 just felt right. The F80 in comfort is a bit too light, but it's the best mode.

2) The stereo. The stock system in the E90 is better than the HK in the F80.

3) The exhaust note. The N54 just sounded better with the valves open than the S55 does. Closed, they're both craptastic.

The ride quality in the F80 is much better (at least with the M Adaptive Suspension) than the E90 with or without RFTs. With RFTs in the E90, it was awful. Taking the RFTs off, it was alright, but the F80 is much better.

You won't have any complaints with the F80 as a DD.
