As someone who's been driven in an F80 M3, I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised by the exhaust note on this car. While I agree that this video doesn't sound very good, actually driving in a warmed up M3 sounds amazing. It's got a very throaty sound to it with a pretty noticeable turbo noise as well. I can't wait until everyone starts taking delivery of these

One thing that should be very important to know is that when a modern BMW is cold, especially an M car, the ECU is really gimping gas pedal response. That's why in parts you can hear it revving to a point and holding there, like a rev limiter, but at a much lower RPM. You can throw the pedal to the floor from idle and the engine will just slowly meander its way up the RPM range until the idle fuel cut. As others have said, flaps in the exhaust are closed too, which will make it sound a bit anemic.
Nobody should be taking this video to be in any way indicative of how the car sounds when at operating temperature and under load. |

Ambient temps can be "cold" enough, and 10-20 seconds isn't nearly enough to warm up to proper running temps, even if ambient is 90 degrees. The car needs to be driven to get up to temp remotely quickly. Or you could let it idle for 15+ minutes, but that's never a good idea.

Heard the exhaust at low RPMs today at the NYIAS... Sounded better than this video might suggest.

I'm not digging that exhaust note. It's sounds really bad.

Exhaust sound
My dealer called me today and told me they had the new M3 in with a BMW rep. Unfortunately I did not have the time today to cruise down to check it out. But he was telling me that with the mode settings of the car(comfort ,sport , and sport plus) the exhaust note changes and is the loudest in sport plus. He said the BMW rep demonstrated this reving the vehicle and in sport plus the vehicle sounded amazing. Is this true?

OP, you didn't specify who was your "dealer". Porsche dealers say this about the 911's exhaust in the context of settings. Are you talking about a BMW dealer? If so, which one.

I just need to know, will my neighbors like me, or will the status quo be held. If they start liking me, I will need the help to make the car louder. I can't stand small talk, and confusing them by answering to the hi how are you line is getting old.
And by answering, I will go in to details if needed to avoid an other small talk session. Last edited by Lups; 04-19-2014 at 12:05 AM.. Reason: Again, a reef size barrier. |

Can't beat the V8 sound, with the turbo on a 6 cylinder they can probably only do so much. It may sound bad but I'm sure it'll sound awesome on the inside with the active sound speaker fixes the noise.

When I got in the current 335i perf edition I would always put the car in sport plus before starting just like I push m button on my e92m into sport plus before starting
Not sure why the dealers wouldn't already know that or keep it in comfort to start Sucks that comfort is default on new cars From the evidence at hand, at the very basic the perf exhaust is prerequisite I wouldn't trust the dealers opinion without first hand evidence The safety car sounds like what the new car should sound like at the very least But hope remains |

I can't buy a car that sounds worse then my current one. But I will want something faster. I wonder if they are still putting v8s into z06s.
