Cracked radio buttons

My 3, 4 and 5 radio buttons were starting to show surface cracks. Thought BMW would just replace the buttons but are replacing the entire head unit instead. Apparently programming is involved too...is that a full software update with updated HUD, change in exhaust sound?

Those are interesting cracks... weird

To answer your question it depends, they may just program the modules related to the head unit. To update the HUD etc they would need to program the full car. You can the dealer to be sure and ask for a full car. Again it depends on how well you know your service dept folks.

Most of the time when they program the car they just plug it in to their system and it determines all modules that need to be programmed/updated. They don't select which ones to update so it will likely be a global update.

the downside is that any coding you have done will be wiped out.

Got the car back...must have been a full software update as iDrive looks different and I have the blue HUD screen. And she feels a little faster...than the loaner car.

They are very handy, you can tag any option in your idrive to those buttons, the term radio button is not accurate as they are really shortcut buttons.

You must click thru your idrive to toggle something frequently, set a shotcut button to do it.

My 08 M5 had a knob behind the volume brake and the solution was replace the radio! I do not use the buttons everything stays set and does not change.

I tried to set the buttons to 2 of my preferred FM radio stations, and apparently it didn't take. Makes me feel a bit daft that I can't program a preset without referring to the manual (I know, RTFM).

Anyone care to enlighten me so I don't have to open a book?

I have the same types of cracks in my f30. They started to appear about a year into the lease. Hope my f80 doesn't get them.

Go to the selection area for your radio station. Don't actually select it. Hold down the button you want to program it to. Wait for idrive to tell you it's programmed. Repeat for other buttons.

This buttons wear very quickly with minimal use. I experienced in both my 2016 M4 and 2018 M3. I have my 1 button mapped to pull up tire pressures quickly and that ones starting to see some small cracks/fading about 3 years in =/

Ive found some F-series people that had the same issue and were just able to order the buttons off of aliexpress/amazon, pry them off and install the new ones, and works like new.

I placed an order last week and will give it a go - if not, even though its a small imperfection its going to the dealer
