Wait, you think it sounds like a flat 6? Or an inline 6?

Maybe I missed something in this thread (I'll admit I didn't read every post), but from the clip it sounded like a not terribly impressive turbocharged inline 6. I'm not hearing a flat 6 sound at all myself.

I'm personally waiting to hear it in person before I make any final judgments. I'd be lying though if I said these previews aren't making me a little nervous about the sound aspect.

Yep flat 6. Porsche flat 6 sounds rough, pops and crackles just like this. We really need to hear upper rpms.

For now it's poor sound for an M3/M4.
But i hope it's not the final, or it will sound better in person!!!

That's probably how it will sound in real life without all of the unnatural acoustics of garages, small rooms, convention centers, etc.

On a positive note the cars look well designed and I look forward to driving one--more torque, less weight, more CF. All good except sound.

There is probably enough sound deadening material that you won't be able to hear much engine induction or exhaust sounds from inside the cabin of the new M3. For better or worse, BMW felt it necessary to electronically amplify the sound.

Or that is a pre production setup and we are now hearing the production line exhaust. That video is from Sept 2011. Who knows what that test car had on it at that time, if it even had the same engine design then.

That is true as well, but when I watch the videos of the M3 on track, it sounds much closer to that 2011 video than it does these indoor sound clips (..specifically at 2:05-ish of the video below).

I'm trying to figure out why the guy is like "Here's some noise" at the end of the video? My mind keeps thinking he could've used a better set of words like "Here's some engine sound" or "Exhaust note". Seems his wording of (noise) means obnoxious or annoying???? Just look at his face at the end.

that's a question you're going to give ask bmw themseleve. It's just smart business on bmw part knowing people are willing to spend money. Give them something but don't give them too much.

I'm sure there will be many BMW "Performance" accessories offered not too long after launch, which eventually will include a rear section exhaust.

So you think this is just psychology tactics? Come on bro. I call bullshit on that thought. BMW engineers do not sit around thinking about ways to mess with us. Nor do they sit there and make an exhaust note sound bad, so we HAVE to purchase the after market exhaust. Asinine thinking. This runs along the lines of "that guy cut me off because he is jealous of my car". Common sense states that the exhaust note is just not pleasing to everyone who is interested in this car. Plain and simple. I am not a fan of the sound of a Mustang, but plenty of people shoot in their pants when they hear one. OPINION.

Sounds like crap and fanboys here still eat it up lol!!!

BMW always makes crappy exhausts, they want you to shell out thousands more for the "performance exhausts".

Yeah exactly, as well as Akrapovic and Eisenmann coming to the rescue.

Not at all. Just sick of idiots claiming ridiculous bullshit. And how I "sound" in your head is another assumption.
