The F80 is super quick (some bolt-ons) but I'm almost turning 40 and I think I may need to tone it down a bit. Plus the G80 is not something I want at the moment.

Will I experience instant regret picking up the MYP coming from an F80?
Well, I did it. Blue/white MYP. No ragrats so far. Fit and finish is no where near the Germans but it's pretty good.

Thinking I will pay this thing off and then find a used 991 or 992 as a toy.
Congrats, enjoy the new Tesla.

noticing a lot of south florida peeps swapping from M3's to Model 3/Y's.

I was on that boat but just swapped back into a M3.

As reliable and fun it is to drive there was always something missing.

I will say the Model 3 is an excellent road trip car though...(minus the long waits at the supercharger stations during weekends/holidays)

On average I've waited close to 45 minutes (before starting charge) due to the limited availability at the time of supercharger stations on the turnpike. Hoping now that they've built more there won't be a long line to wait.

Interesting. In 2 years of ownership I have yet to wait *at all* for Supercharger access. (I’ve done 15+ road trips in the car in that timeframe)

I've also experienced super chargers that have started to overheat so it cuts the output significantly. This happened to me at Harris Ranch over the summer. It's not perfect but there is really no competition right now so what can you do.

I totally understand. Walking away from the F80 was really tough, and who knows perhaps at some point I may come to a different conclusion about the Tesla. Right now it just seems to make sense for me personally. The MYP is quick enough, is capable enough, and it won't lure me down the modding rabbit hole (simply don't have time to build/mod another car). The EV experience so far has been fantastic, I think everyone who can should give it a try.

Congrats on your new MYP.

You are right on with your plan to get a used 911 to share garage space with Tesla. I’ve been very happy with that setup for several years now

That being said, UP posted a 1:36.xx at Laguna Seca with their M3P test car so there’s more evidence that if you want to, you can use the EV for track days as well

To be clear, the UP car is essentially a stripped down EV race car. It seats 1, has no interior, a roll cage, and is far from a daily driver haha. Impressive time nonetheless, but it would be misleading to anyone to think they can go buy a Model 3P and think they'll be turning in hot laps at LS and then go pick up some groceries afterwards.

This is correct plus the car has carbon body panels and full Michelin slicks (not Cup2s but actual slicks). Its cool to see them get after it but its not a direct comparison. It would be like buying a showroom M4 and comparing it the lap times of the factory M4 GT4 race car...

Yes, that’s a fair point.

There’s still the 1:37.5 LS time from last year set by a full interior car with mountain pass Perfomance suspension parts

I get that it’s hard to compare times across days but my main point still holds.... you don’t “need” a gas car to be reasonably fast at casual HPDE events anymore. It’s come down to a personal preference for the most part

And don't you miss the sound of the engine and the smell of gasoline? I have nothing against Tesla, but from M3 to Tesla, that's a bold change

I will pick silence over stock f80 and most aftermarket f80 noise, sorry.

Jokes aside, if your f80 is a commuter, EV with advanced driver assist is a huge win. If f80 is your toy, then don’t get rid of it for an EV, unless you are able to also consider the EV a toy.

Also have to factor in space if a daily. The M3P is a much smaller car inside than an F80. The reason I never got one as a giant.

I agree tho.. silence > stock s55.

I’m curious what gives you the impression that a 3 series is larger inside than the Tesla Model 3? According to the specifications, the Model 3 has more front seat room, more cargo space and equal rear seat room...

Silence is golden for long drives and commutes. It's just when you wanna feel like your driving a muscle car is when I get in the F80. I'd pick Model 3 for everyday car over F80 most days bc of the AP. The whole tech package is light years ahead vs BMW.

I'm pretty sure the Model 3 is bigger inside than my F80. Like very sure even without looking at numbers. It feels big and airy. It also eaiser for me to load my Trek Domane in the trunk vs the F80. So if he's really tall, the Model 3 would feel much rommier all around and especially the headroom. No contest to which car has for headroom. Even in the back.

I’m 6’7” 270 and have driven both a lot. If they claim the M3P has more drivers space it didnt ever feel that way to me. Except head room.

I didnt buy a M3P due to how cramped I was but I owned an F80 without space issues for 2 years. I essentially had to sit with my legs like a frog in the Tesla.

Even posted about it in this thread previously.

I wonder what your take is on the Model Y. Should feel a bit more airy than the 3 especially at 6'7". BTW, you're like 7 series/X7 sized in BMWs haha. But you're right, you have no business in a Model 3. Model S or X for you in Tesla. I see cars like clothes. Gotta buy what fits. Oddly, my old neighbor who's an ex-NFL running back at 6'5" drove around in a Mini Cooper for fun. Always got a good laugh when people saw him get out of it.

Yep.. this is why I finally gave in at 41 years old and just ordered an X5 as a daily. The ramifications of squeezing myself into small cars is worse than the fun these days.

One if the reasons Ive always been an M3 stan is because its one of the only fun “sports cars” I can fit in decently well.

I used to be crazy and drove things like a 911...

I would like to try a MY.

In no way am I questioning what you felt, but it seems odd since the measurements say that the Model 3 has at least 2” more front legroom and 1.5” more front headroom than the 3 series...

Maybe the Model 3’s seat is closer to the floor so the lower half of your legs were less bent downward?

I looked up the specs cause I was truly interested. I see 42” in the m3 and 42.7” in the Tesla. So .7”. Headroom is identical. (Per car and driver)

I guess it has to do with the seating position. Its actually odd to me because in the car the Tesla seemed subsequently smaller.

My mistake on the actual legroom spec, but the Model 3 still has more.

Headroom is 1.6” more in the Model 3, according to Edmunds. Trunk capacity 15 cubic feet in the Model 3 vs. 13 cubic feet in the 3 series, but that number doesn’t include the Model 3’s huge underfloor trunk compartment or “frunk”, each of which will easily swallow a rolling carry-on bag.

Bottom line is that the Model 3 is roomier overall. To me it feels about as large inside as most recent mid-size German sedans (5 series, A6, E-class)
