Well no wireless headphone will be close audiophile quality, so FYI there. If you want better mobile sound with a wireless headphone when wired, then you can get an external DAC or DAC/amp to plug into your phone like the Dragon Flys, Chord Mojo, iDSD nano black label, etc. That also gives you the ability to buy some high quality wired headphones and drive them from your phone.

For wireless noise cancelling headphones you've got the usual suspects which I'd rank this way:

* Sony WH-1000XM2
* B&O Beoplay H9i
* Bowers & wilkins PX
* Bose QC 35 2
* V-moda crossfades
* Sennheiser Momentum

The top 3 will all provide excellent sound, the Bose are best at noise cancelling.

What's not on this list is my beloved B&W P7s - for me these are the best sounding wireless on market, but they're hard to find now. They're not noise cancelling, but they're quite isolating and oh lord are they great for EDM, Deep House, and anything with a beat. You WILL PARTY. If I air travel, I bring the P7s. I'm considering getting the H9i just for wireless variety - the rest just didn't have a sound profile that appealed to me and I find noise cancelling to be mostly useless - I'd much rather have (my version) great sound.

I would say those top 3 are all great sound but more "neutral" whereas I find Bose to flat. For me the Bose were so bad I put them back in the box in under 2 minutes and that might not be fair, but the P7s ruined me. They are not neutral, but way "warm" with a suppressed treble. They not bass heavy crap like beats, but more bass heavy awesome - super clean. They are extremely forgiving and will make any recording sound great. When I go from the P7s to just about any other low-fi headphone including any on this list I almost cry. Audiophile quality wireds like the Senn hd600/50/60s or Massdrop's Fostex Th-x00 will show you the shortcomings of the P7s, with the THx00 provider a similar profile but much more resolving (those all require decent DACs and Amps)

The P7s are directly responsible for me spending thousands on mid-fi audio gear. Later on this year I'm probably going to buy one of Zach's hand-made ZMF Atticus headphones ... I'm kinda waiting for him to bring back cocobolo wood, but I'll take paduk or purple heart.

Anyway, a few other notes:

Hi-Res Music
As defined as anything higher than CD quality (16/44), is mostly worthless unless you've got $15,000 of headphone gear and 5+ years of analytical listening experience. That said, even the best paid spotify / google play streams are 4x+ crappier than CD quality and you can definitely hear it with decent headphones. Basically if you're under CD quality you'll be missing an emotional component to the music which you can tell once you start going back and forth. The emotional piece, once you realize it, becomes addictive (see $$$ above). Personally I used Tidal Hi-Fi which steams at CD and higher, and I shockingly really like Tidal. I don't like Jay-Z or any of the marketing bullshit around the company - it's a bad brand for me ... but I really like the app, the Mac app, etc and the quality can't be beat so ... I'm in on Tidal and would definitely recommend it. On a PC it allows you skip your PC's shitty DAC and send a "bit perfect" stream down USB directly to an external DAC. nice!

Bluetooth Encoding
They matter. AptX (AptX-HD isn't needed), or Sony's LDAC are good, but your device needs to support them as do the headphones. Personally I can hear a difference between aac, AptX, and SBC and have an almost 100% blind test success rate. For me there's a difference. with AptXHD I wasn't picking it any better than random chance.

Sorry you asked?

Yeah, we're all different, but for me those are the worst sounding headphones I've ever tried - they sound shittier than $20 headphones to me. just horrific. They're the only headphones I've tried where I can literally find nothing good to say about their sound. I have underwater earbuds for swimming that sound better.

On the plus side they're the most comfortable headphones I've ever put on except for the Aeon Flows and I'd say the AFs aren't better, just similar in comfort.

Also, noise cancellation is worthless for me, but Bose is the best at it.

And I'm not a Bose hater, some of my best friends use Bose ... plus I have a pair of Bose on-ear soundlinks that I use every day and like them quite a bit. They also come with me during travel because they're great at the gate or for taking calls on the go - they're excellent at that - lots of people say I sound better through those than using my phones microphone. And they're pretty good for shows and movies when you want a simple light headphone. My P7 are excellent, but i only use them when I'm settled in for awhile because they're big and isolating, otherwise I use the Bose on-ears.

This is the problem recommending headphones - it's like recommending vacation spots or DCT vs MT - too many preferences and trade-offs.

BTW, for hiking and working out I use the MEE X7+ (they have newer now) and they're pretty damn good: great isolation, working in rain and wet, easy to control and ultralight. I usually just put one side in unless i need to jam to some tunes.

Anyway, I understand why you have to do this Tri thing, and I'm here for you.

Audio stuff is like Exhaust noise, it honestly differs from person to person but I'll try to see if I can get my hands on either one.

Maybe a Bose store... Wouldn't know about the Sony one though.

I like Sony headphones, Bose is generally more base heavy though aren't they?

There is a mild chance I wasn't kidding all these years about my milk addiction. It is a new low in life when you kick out the kids and spent the night emptying the fridge. I can justify this by saying I didn't let 68 cents times 5 go to waste but even for me that seems a bit feeble.

Anyway! Now I'm fully hydrated and the urge to dance passed so today's torture is cross country skiing! Easter break is to be spent with sports so why not go for torment instead of something fun!

This is where tinnitus comes into play...built in noise cancelling, can't "hear the wife/kids"...

if I were to spend more than $20 on a pair it would be waist of money! LOL...

That’s the funny thing, I am pretty much a Bose (aka Blose) hater. I think their current speaker lineup is pretty much crap for the most part. But, for some reason I love those.

Thanks for the support, I’m gonna need it.

Most of them you get a 30 day free returns trial, including through amazon. B&W gives you 60 days if you go through the site. I usually just order all of them and then return the ones I don't like - that way you can try them with your own gear in the environment you'd actually be listening to them in.

With Sony, Bose, B&W I took them on flights (not the QC35 but others), etc. Ultimately this is how I figured out I like a wired headphone with a separate DAC. Once I heard that wireless didn't cut it anymore.

Anyway, yeah of all of the noise-cancelling ones I liked the Sony's for sound but a lot of people really like the B&W PX if you don't want to turn on noise cancelling.

As for the noise cancelling, most testing says Sony is the best, plus Sony has all the extra features that Bose lacks ... but to my ear Bose is better at noise cancelling and Bose are WAY more comfortable and I don't use all the Sony features.

All of that said, if I had phone or DAP that supported LDAC Sony is going to be the best wireless. Later this year I'll probably try the Bang & Olufsen H9i ...

This guy does a few different comparo youtubes which I thought were good

We here are great at naming things, so ssott stands for Super Secret Off Topic Thread.

We have rules here all posters agree on, the penalty of expulsion is a threat we all live under.

1. During the football season, we all work on depressing our only Jets fan. I've never watched a game but I wear my jets shirt religiously every day I think the season is on.

2. All arguing allowed, we do it in good spirits often but if needed blame your loss on Canadians.

3. I think we have a few more rules but that's basically it.

Welcome to the ssott.

I can always depress a Jets fan by bragging about Cowboys Super Bowl victories. Unfortunately, I cannot do that to Eagles fans anymore.
I don't blame Canadians, I blame my dog.
Am I correct in assuming this thread falls under south and central America?

That's how we keep it super secret.

We do engage in debates: political, music, movies, best libations ... mostly this thread exists to explain to (((myzmak))) exactly how and why he's wrong about stuff and it seemed cruel to just do that out in the open.

I blame my kids, especially this weekend when they're not home and I have hit rock bottom with my milk consuming ways. I've never seen myself as an unreasonable or overtly stubborn but I may have to do some self reflecting.

This used to be in the northwest but our old one got shut down after 30000 posts so we moved to a warmer climate.

Gg and Rd and Minnie, what's your take on Satan 2? I read up on it but I have very little understanding on all things missle and objects that fly. The multiple warhead capability is not a new thing of course but that one seems a bit over the top, that's not for wiping out cities, to me it smells more like an emp porn.

Educate me please.

It's for wiping out Florida......
From any direction.
Really it's an all new missile, really not related to the rd36 (satan 1), much like the tu-22m backfire isn't really related to the original tu 22

Yeah, the name is the only part inherited.

What a time to be alive! We can have active shooter drills and nuclear strike drills yo make school days more fun!

But the capability to carry that many warheads pretty much would wipe out half of Europe or up to 15% of USA in one blow. Considering how cyber is the real battle field, I can't see a point in this if not to nock down electronics from a wide area. USA or no other country has no means to strike down one of these and why would they use one? They're already in your electrical grid and in your minds. Why go after the old folks who lived through the cold war in this old way?

I'm thinking of it as a poor man's fobs (fractional orbital bombardment system). I think the new ICBM and the hypersonic missile are very destabilizing. There's really no need for those at all.

The world has gone nuts and we all should maybe stop voting for shitheads. Got it!

Oh well, as long as Germany remains stable we all should be fine! I will not read german papers anymore because their shit got scary too.

See, I'm practicing my hedgehog defense system. It works on everything else but milk comas.it would work with milk comas too if I had a straw.

Check out this dink in the Whole Foods parking lot in Cupertino last night; blocking practically a whole lane of traffic

The best was, those are compact car parking spots vs the opposite side

If that's the goal, why not NYC? The traffic alone has to cause permanent mental capacity issues and they did give us all trump!

Florida has everglades! Hands off from my dream holiday place! You hear that Putin!? Can't you pick a fight for once all adults are on your side on and bomb Denmark!? It's even close! You'd get a nobel for that!

Sorry. I stepped on a Lego again

Yes, but by him targeting Florida, it will lower the average age of our citizens by 10 yrs. this will lower all of our insurance premiums and improve our average time spent in traffic.
