I'd take it to the dealer. If you fill it up, it's just going to empty again straight into your engine, and that's where you don't want it to go. It took them less a week to get the parts and labor to get mine done, but I had another issue as well (turbo leak).

Man this sucks I guess I have to cancel track weekend, I know it is a lease and maybe I can take it and fill it up but, after that, there is no way I am keeping the car. You will probably see my wheels and new set of track tires for sale soon

Just get it replaced and keep driving the car, as you can see this happens to a lot of people just fix it and keep driving. It's not like the car is totaled or the engine is compromised

Get the heat exchanger replaced before going to the track.

What are the odds? Mine is def losing fluid after a top off and alacritous drive around the metro.

I wonder how many s55s are cluelessly running around low on coolant worldwide?

If I have not seen this thread I probably would have taken the car again to the track with low coolant. Thank you all for making this forum the best source to keep our cars up to date.

Good point. Even though the online enthusiast community only represents a small subset of S55 owners, the response in this thread still does seem high.

Maybe the thread title should be changed to get more visibility. Something like: "F8X S55 Owners BEWARE: Stock Charge Cooler Leaking Issue"

I find it hard to picture an S55 owner/driver not being an enthusiast, and not on one or more forums. And agree with title suggestion.

If anyone in So-Cal has their charge air cooler replaced, please ask for the old part (It's free!) and I'll come pick it up. I will be happy to take a stock charge cooler core and open it up and investigate what is causing them to fail! (cores breaking internally or the end tank plastic coming apart)

We're cutting mine open tomorrow. I'll keep you posted, but from the quick look inside, the fins are being damaged somehow.

Damaged? From what pressurized air? Makes me think if the fins are being "hit" by something, the most likely culprit is blowby particles from the PCV system that make it back into the intake. Or possible oil blowby from a leaking turbo seal?

It will be interesting to see what you find...

Wow!!! Just stumbled into this thread. I will definitely check mine when I get home.

For those with confirmed leaks and dealerships replacing the intercoolers, did they do anything to clean up the manifold and internals from the residue?

The turbos were amazingly clean, and I'm running a catch can.

In my mind, it's either the catch can is missing a lot, or the internal fin design is that weak that they just fail. You can see damage to the fins on both the cold and hot sides. I'm a biologist, not an engineer so all I know is that something is causing those fins to go.

Definitely not oil blow by... if I where to take my best bet I think the aluminum fins are weak (it is a weak metal) and begin to deteriorate due to the intense heat and pressure of air flowing through there.

I agree that the "weak fin" hypothesis is most likely the issue. I was just spit ballin' the idea about blowby. I have a catch can installed as well and I my charge cooler is not leaking (knock on wood..)
