X3M on order. Trade my 18 M4C and buy older one to modify or keep/modify current M4?
I'm at a crossroads on what to do. I have an X3MC on order that is being built this Friday so is probably about 3 weeks from delivery. This will be the new daily
My current car is a 2018 M4 Comp loaded with factory options and in great condition. 43k miles, a good amount of CF mods, KW HAS, and some other minor things. No engine mods other than the AA mid-pipe and CBC. Once I get the X3MC I was considering doing all of the engine stuff to the M4 such as DPs, Flex Fuel, Pure Stage 2+, fuel pump, etc to get to around 650rwhp. I would also probably do wheels and maybe a wrap. But then I got to thinking. If I am going to do all of this stuff, would it be better to buy a cheaper pre-LCI M4 base (or comp) and modify it? I can trade the M4 into the dealer based on pretty good used car values right now (and take advantage of the tax break on trades in AZ). Then, wait a little while for the right deal to come along on a cheaper older M4 to pick up and do work to. Why put a bunch of money into a newer/nicer M4 when I can probably get the same outcome from a cheaper car and get a pretty good trade in on my current M4. So what would you do? Trade the M4 and get a cheaper one to modify. Or just keep the current one and modify it? I feel like the better financial decision (yes, I know these are all bad financial decisions) might be to trade it in and modify an older one. Thanks

I don't think my piece of mind would change really. I already have a 700+hp 2016 Chevy SS Sedan sitting in my garage that is really my garage queen. I bought that brand new off the show roof floor and did all of the work on it myself in my garage. The M4 (whether this one or another one) would be like a secondary daily driver. The X3MC is really going to be the wife's daily since I work from home so the M4 wouldn't be driven a ton either way. It would be a semi-garage queen I guess.

It's tough to imagine used car resale prices being this good for much longer. I'd sell/trade the current M4 then wait for a cost effective replacement when the time is right. If you're going for big horsepower and heavy modifications then I can't see any justification for not getting a 2015 base car.

If the X3M is your wife’s daily then keep it stock and mod the M4 and enjoy the Chevy! Don’t waste the money on X3M mods imo.

I'm definitely not going to mod the X3M. That is staying stock. I was talking about moding the M4 👍🏼

if you got your m4c at pre-pandemic prices, then i'd keep it and mod it instead. there's no need to sell when the market is kinda high and then buy a pre lci m4 when the market is still kinda high unless you can get pre-pandemic prices which is pretty tough these days unless tons of owner and have a story attached to the VIN. i'd say mod the m4c you have as you wish because mods can be reverted and parted out.

If you try to run big HP maybe can consider a salvaged/rebuilt one, big HP means reliability goes to shit anyway. That's my two cents if you really try to save money, you can beat the shit out of it and not give a fuck.
