Drivetrain malfunction

guys

had a error code pop up at WOT yesterday and car went into limp mode.

getting on the highway top of 2nd gear, gunned it, 5 seconds into it error code "Drivetrain malfunction" and power cut.

i pulled over on the shoulder and turned the car off and on. everything was fine, did few WOT runs as a check, all good.

anyone encounter anything like that?

mods: KN&N drop in filters and JB stage 1

DCT car, auto shifting so didn't over rev

I've had the same issue I couple of times. I have catless DPs and jb4 on map 2. Might have something to do with the jb4 in my opinion

Could be a high RPM misfire? What fuel were you using? Any chance you have a code scanner that could read the codes?

Did you read the codes with the JB4 after your issue? The JB4 has built in code reading so it should be simple to pull the codes and see what the issue is / was?

Looks like he's got Stage 1. No codes in there right?

I wouldn't worry I had this twice on my M5 with JB4 and charcoal deletes once randomly and after 15 minutes of sitting never came back [that was at 2k miles], and then at 17k miles when I turned the boost up double and it came on at the speed limiter so full WOT and that I'm pretty sure was it doing it due to fueling limitations and that much extra boost...

Bottom line unless it doesn't appear to be random in its occurrence or you are able to replicate its appearance I wouldn't worry.

I've never had it come on, on the m4 and I've had the JB4 on since 3k miles

Yup. Unless you splice it in with I believe the green wires [stage2+ ready], you cant read codes.

I think he's got the $379 "JB stage 1" that does not even have that option.

Yeah its basically just the Map /tmap boost controller.. Thats what I did with my Stage 1 on the JB4 beta testing, just hooked up those two, I wasn't comfortable splicing wires to the car with that few miles on it lol.

93 octane, dont have a scanner, should hook up with someone who has one to check out the codes

yeah, JB Stage 1, so cant get the codes from the tune only from the car itself, which im not sure will be very helpful

It's almost always a Fuel issue. Even being low in fuel as in quarter tank I got that with a tune.

Don't dismiss BMW bad parts out of the equation.
I have got that before and it was a bad TMAP sensor. Few of my customers got the same thing happened and once the TMAP replaced, it never came back.
Trust me, BMW insider told me that corporate try to save every penny possible.
And not everybody do WOT with their car.

thanks for the input, i'll leave everything as is for now and see if it comes up again. if it does then i'll start investigating further.
with my 07 335 i got that 2-3 times in 3 years of ownership so it wasnt a head ache, however a friend of mine had it on a regular basis with f30 335 and had to lemon the car because bmw couldnt identify the issue

It's JB4.

I can recreate it almost on demand. Happened so often (driving hard often) that I pulled my JB4 all together.

Happened on my 6MT completely stock, not under WOT. Ran rough. Pulled over. Turned car off for 30 seconds. Started back up and never returned.

Use the JB4 to read the fault code then so BMS can fix it for you.

Really? So what explains the same occurrence on the stock cars listed above? Maybe the JB4 fairy visited them at night and installed it without them knowing.
