Can you elaborate on application? Meaning hours racing, # trackday sessions, drifting day, miles, ets?

Damn, that's a whole nother level of consumable.
I'm usually thinking tires, brake pads and rotors.

Which part of it is confusing? That the differential failed early? I couldn't tell you that. Wheel Bearings on the hand wears out from hard driving.

Wheel bearings don't surprise me at all. Slicks and a 3500lb car. Wheel studs, wheel bearings, brake rotors and pads, all will be consumables. Heck the Vettes are so much worse in that regard.

Even Miata consumes wheel bearings when you're using it for spec competition (the rate of consumption is obviously much lower in a 2400lb with driver / ~125whp car)

Thanks for sharing OP! What's your plan with the rear diff?

Differential and wheel bearings was covered by warranty. I don't abuse my M3 but I truly enjoy her once or twice a month at the track. I get an oil change once every 3 track days, alignment whenever I put on a set of tires, replace all studs ever year etc, etc. I know I maintain my car better than most M3/M4 owners. Oh, and I'm getting extended warranty before she rans out.

Which dealer do you go for service and warranty?

Wheel bearings replacement are not unusual for an r-comp track driven car. I had wheel bearings replaced under warranty on all my previous M3/4 thus far. All were on the left hand side, not surprising since all the tracks I run are clockwise.

Interesting, what were the symptoms of the failed bearings?

Audio of a bad wheel bearing in my stripped out race car. Pretty easy to hear. It’s louder or quieter depending on the direction of the turn as the hub loads more/less weight. FYI you don’t always feel much perceptible play in the hub when on a rack, so if you’re in doubt you’re better off replacing.

Thanks for sharing. Cool race car 🏎. Back to my wheel bearings. The mechanic mentioned that my rear wheel bearings were dry or lacked grease at failure (30k miles). Knowing that little information. I'm already making a mental note to do a preventive wheel bearing maintenance at 15k interval in the future. How often do you do it w/ your race car OP? Thanks.

Not a bad idea if you track your car a lot. I try to replace mine every year on the race car. Rear bearings need a press on an E36. Not sure on F82, looks like the hub is being replaced as a unit in your picture? Looks expensive

Should be a factory sealed bearing, so maybe the seal broke and that’s why there was no grease left? Or just mechanic bs? Curious if you noticed any issues that prompted the dealer to look into the bearings?

I was going to start a thread on this very topic. My last event was at Spring Mountain, NV. I was chasing a Corvette and had my best time of the day. But towards the end of the session I felt and heard what seemed like a tire coming apart. Limped back to the pits and checked the right side tires and all appeared good. Then I noticed that 3 OEM stud bolts had sheared off at the right rear. I looked at the left side and 1 left rear bolt had sheared. I had no idea that the bolts or studs are consumables. I was very lucky. Top speed at this track for me is 136 mph.
So what other items are consumables? Maybe front lower control arms? I was following a Carrera S at Laguna and coming out of turn 6 his left front suspension broke and he went very straight right into tire wall. Big damage.

Let’s hear from other experiences with failures. We all want to stay safe.

Interesting and valuable feedback.

I have also sheared 3 OE bolts on my 2015 M4. Although not in as dramatic situation as you. For me, they were 3 distinct event that occurred while I was torqueing the bolts (yes, with a properly calibrated torque wrench). Looking at the sheared bolts, it was clear that it was from fatigue. I however attributed the likelihood of the initial distress to a shop mechanic over-torqueing the bolts: I recalled an event where I had to use a 3 foot bar to un-torque the bolts after the car was in the shop. I since replaced all 20 bolts with brand new ones.

Now that you mention a similar event, I wonder if the bolts on the F8X are a weak spot and that they will require regular preventative replacement.

20-years of tracking cars before my M4, including an E46 and E92 M3, and I never had a single bolt shear off.

Initially, I thought a rear bent wheel was causing the faint thumping sound from the back. Swapped the rear wheels with another set but sound remained.

Crazy! How often do you take her to the track? How old is the M3/M4? I'm trying to gauge how long these oem bolts lasted before it failed. Look into the 80MM MSI Racing stud and bolt conversion. I like it.

I bought the car in Munich in September 2014. It has about 30 track days. I’ve used Hoosiers 285 and 315. That certainly contributes to the problem. Just installed Apex studs and will change them every two years.
