Question about the Maintenance Notifications (oil change minder)
Hello, I just want to make sure I understand what my M3 is telling me. I've seen that it's giving me a notification that I need to change the engine oil in about 9,000 miles or Nov. 2018 (right now obviously) when I check the notifications.
I know the car notifies based on miles driven or time since last oil change up to one year interval. The car was delivered to the dealer in Nov. 2017 (although I took delivery in Dec. 2017). I just had the 1200 mile service done in Sept. 2018 right at 1,205 miles, which included an oil change of course. They cleared that notification. So, in my mind, the oil change "clock" should now be based on that Sep. 2018 date while I think it's still thinking it hasn't had oil changed since it was new. This makes sense right? So I'm good to just reset the oil change reminder? I know it will be off in the sense that 1 year interval would really be Sep. 2019 so I'll need to take it in before the next oil change notice actually pops up next Nov. 2019. Anyway, just checking I got this right. Thanks all. |

Correct
If your sure that the oil was changed you should be good to reset the reminder. The car will tell you based upon needs if anything is needed sooner. Welcome to the family. |

Actually, I don't think that is correct - if I understand what the OP is saying. The 1200 mile break in service does not count towards the normal oil change intervals - I believe they are both tracked differently by the car. While the dealer did reset the 1200 mile service notification after it was done, I don't remember them resetting the normal oil change service indication on my car after the 1200 mile service was done. So in other words, unless the dealer failed to follow their own procedures for the 1200 mile service, the OP should not need to have anything else reset regarding the oil change interval.
I do know that for other maintenance items that use the oil change service, the 1200 mile oil change is not counted. For example, in accordance with the factory maintenance schedule for the F80, spark plugs are to be changed every 3 oil service intervals (or approx every 30k miles). The 1200 mile break in service is not counted in the 3 oil service interval. On a side note, I think you need to let the beast out of the cage more so it can stretch its legs. These cars love to be driven on a regular basis.....

Similar thing happened to me. Went in for 1200 run in service. When I got the car back it said oil change in 1/19 (next month) or 8000 miles. The SA reset it and now it says 12/19 or 10,000 miles.

Like someone already said, run in service isn't part of regular maintenance and simply forget about it, follow the vehicle messages. In the end why are all of you scared to have engine oil changed few hundred miles after? It's a good thing, and probably one of the reasons it's designed like that. You do 1200miles run in service and for the next one you won't wait 10 000miles but it'll be done sooner. Engine is still new and some metal particles are still coming off of it, now there comes that first regular service which most of us get due to time. Fresh oil won't hurt the engine and it's free |

Everyone I've spoken with recommends 5k intervals if you intend to keep the car. One is a long time tech (20yrs easy) and he says the internals are much cleaner when using shorter intervals.
I'm doing 5k tweeter changes on my own in between dealer visits. |
