I think it's a pretty big oversight, especially for the M3. I can see skipping it maybe on the M4, but a 4 door sedan should have them.
It's all about the lightweight. Rear armrest with cupholders adds weight.

Don't the door pockets have bottle holders?

I found this to be a good option.

Toyota Sienna has lots of cupholders in the back, no oversight.

I don't sit in the back seat in my M3 too often. But Needsdecaf is right. The doors have a built in cup holder, which are pretty reasonable size wise.

My F30 had the center armrest w fancy cupholder. It was maybe used one or two times in three years...I probably should have told my passengers it was there. They'll live

I know but the op seems to value cup holders more. Look what happens when you put cupholders and super insulation and heavy doors......you get everyone complaining about how heavy the car is. If they didn't offer the moonroof, some one would complain why not, though the carbon roof outsells the moonroof by a huge margin. The RC-F knows this criticism all to well.

Cup holders are cool but I like it because it discourages my kiddos from bringing and or hanging on to drinks in the car, thanks BMW. #nodrinksnospills

Has too funny I them in my M5, but told all the rear seaters no eating in my car nor drinking. With my high speed driving them will still their drinks anyway so no need for them in my vehicles. Another reason I got the M4 so people at work wouldn't ask me to drive.

OP...you could add a cup holder with a booster seat attachment... I apologize for the polka dot towel ahead of time.

'Murica.

Tip: Tell your passengers to put their bottle on the floor, on the seats or in the door cards (depending on the size obvs.).

Definitely not "a big oversight."

Or... don't bring drinks in the car...

So you don't whine about spilling stuff in the car too.

If we don't have cup holders in the front seat, ok that's a genuine complaint.

Back seat? Why? Is it the season of whining or something? What's going on here?

Shoulda got the vert. It has rear cup holders. Honestly, I don't give a damn about the whole "removable roof" thing. I got it for the rear cup holders.

I know right? I only bring water.

I see it as my girl (car) yelling at me if I brought anything BUT water.

I have kids in booster seats. They can't reach the doors and only one seat has a legit cup holder. They use the one in the armrest all the time.

Granted 95% of the time I'm the only one in the car.

The coolest thing happened the other day when my wife could not go to our 7yo son's football game with me. Usually we take her car as it is the family hauler (3 kids here). So after the game my son got his obligatory snacks. This time it was Gatorade and crackers. He opened the crackers and had them almost finished by the time we got to the car. He finished them outside w/o me even saying anything. Anyone that has kids knows this as a breakthrough moment.
