I have a situation.

My girlfriend won't drive my car, she is scared she will send it into a wall, says it's too fast and scary. This has become annoying as i am left driving always, can't have too many drinks at events, can't take a break on the road, can't do anything i am always stuck in the drivers seat.

How can i turn the M4 into a 160 HP Honda civic or something of that sort. I have to be able to have her access the full pedal in any gear and not have her go sideways. I was looking into torque reduction by gear through the whole powerband, will this do it?

If so are there any negative repercussions and am i able to map switch the settings on the fly?

Can't believe i had to write this…

Set TQ reduction to 80% across all gears and see how she likes it.

No harm…unless by her.

For my car, I populated button "M1" with all the lowest settings (efficient, comfort, comfort, etc) and told my wife the first to do every time before driving the car is to press "M1"; and also while driving, if anything happens such as a setting is accidentally pressed, she just needs to press "M1" to restore order. This seems to work, as the car drives just like any other car.

Throttle modulation, she sucks at driving, i need her to get me from point A to Point B though.

I need the car to have the same throttle mapping as a horse and carriage or early 2000's civic.

Also it's a mental block, she thinks it's always going to step on her because i drive it a bit harder, if i can show her even if she mashes the throttle it will stay straight then she will be convinced it's okay.

The woman doesn't understand physics and has anxiety when it comes to cars, anything i can do to lessen that would be ideal.

She is a careful driver as she has owned a mazda 3 for multiple years before selling it but she is used to that so i am not worried about her abilities when it comes to run of the mill cars.

BM3 now supports multiple maps (that are switchable on the fly using steering wheel buttons) - but these cannot be created by the end user.
However, a tuner should be able to create these maps for you and then you can have up to 4 maps bundled in, and one of the maps can be the ‘civic mode, 80% throttled map’.
Ability to create maps yourself and bundle them is on the roadmap for BM3 - but for now, you will need a certified tuner to create these for you and provide you a multi-map.

This would be enough for me to never allow her near my car, regardless of how much I neuter the performance.

What a weird thing. The settings when you first start the car are very much Corolla territory. Have you considered taking her to a driving course where she can learn in a safe environment?

I agree but i think it's largely psychological. She doesn't trust the car will stay in a straight line and doesn't want to commit to learning the throttle and capabilities.

This is annoying for a few reasons, she sold her car as she didn't need it living in a huge city and me having one already and i don't mind driving and it's not like she is taking advantage, she flat out refuses to drive it, even if it means taking a 100 dollar uber.

All i have done is done the basic light level hooning, make it step out a bit here and there on open roads but just knowing this is possible she won't touch it.

Now any place we go i can't really drink, if i get tired driving she can't help, and let's say flat out something happens and i need her to drive us home (migraines, injury (i play a contact sport), long road trip) she will but uncapable. I also don't want a nervous person on the wheel of a 400+ whp rwd car.

I felt a happy medium would be too unleash honda civic mode, show her full throttle, match it up to her mazda she owned and then slowly get her driving random routes.

On the fly map switching would be ideal but it's fine if i have to do a 2 minute flash.

Am i asking too much for a fully capable non mentally disabled person to be able to operate a motor vehicle at limited capacity?

She had previously driven it in efficient mode but the issue is the car is turbo charged so what ended up happening is she felt the copious lag on high way merges and decided to give it only to feel the boost kick in and the bucking to proceed. Since then she wants no part of that shit. I need her to be able to throttle map it to a 140-200 hp car.

I know it's absolutely comical, turning this car into a horse and carriage but i think it needs to be done.

I can't always be driving, sometimes i want to drink and sometimes i flat out don't feel well.

Ya i don't agree with effecient being a civic.

I find it the most frustrating mode due to the lag, you eventually ask for too much throttle and the boost comes on fairly heavy.

At least the other 2 modes everything is expected.

Just my opinion.

Either way i may need to do that, it's the only thing shes comfortable with.

Garage List
2023 BMW M2  [9.17]
Teach her how to activate the low speed assistant when taking off from a stop. If she just smashes the gas it will jerk and feel weird. There is a little learning curve when driving a DCT for the first time

If OP is legitimately serious... ^^^ this. Slot 4 of my tune is a FF valet/wife mode. It's absolutely hilarious to swap over to that map and see the difference.

This is not a car problem, this is a driver problem.

I've had an inexperienced and not very confident person drive my car in efficient/D1 mode and she managed just fine. The car will not step out with DSC on.

If she really can't manage that throttle control I'm sorry but she is better off not driving. The car's throttle not aggressive at all in efficient mode.

Just get her to try it, it'll be fine unless she's completely incompetent.

She has she doesn't like that it has the capability to go fast. It's all mental.

She's waving red flags in front of your face. Tell her to get a Mazda 3 again or pay for the Ubers.

I am not that bad, but maybe.

Either way the valet mode is incoming.

BMW M4 Civic is becoming a reality, no longer a forum meme
