What does this lever do in the trunk?

First time BMW owner here. I RTFM, and Googled, and searched here...and still can't figure it out. What does this lever or switch do on the driver's side of my trunk?

Thanks in advance!

He'll be fine as long as he doesn't let his girl drive.

If I'd opened it, would I have asked this question?

It would’ve been a lot easier to open it than to take a pic and ask here.

It's a $70,000 car that I am unfamiliar with. I couldn't find anything in the owner's manual, nor in my (limited?) Googling, about an outlet in the trunk. The graphic on the item does not look like any other 12V or 110V plug covers I've seen on other vehicles. I preferred to ask people more knowledgeable than me before I went yanking on or pressing things I don't know about.

I always yank and poke first. Then ask questions later.
