So BMW isn't really a renowned maker of V8's. They have made two greats, one good, the rest are meh. Where as they have a much more consistent record with their inline 6's. I would have to agree with the statement that BMW has never really been about V8's.

I agree "great" was not the right adjective to use here. I simply wanted to point out that V8 as much as I4 or I6 have been part of BMW history (despite the 25 year hiatus). Further, looking at stats, their V8s (older or more recent one) are pretty much on par with their I6 in terms of performance per litre throughout the years...

Unfortunate, isn't it? Still powered some crazy fast high revving turbocharged S54s though. Maybe there's no market in that anymore, I don't know. But I'll bet BMW can figure out how to pedal their latest wares to eager enthusiasts.

Guys, just belive that reason why they make it rev "nearly 8000rpm" is that they can make power on low boost. Engine breath better on high revs so no need to add boost so much, means smaller turbo lag, cooler charged air and no overheat issues. If redline is somewhere about 7200rpm ( In my mind "nearly 7000rpm"), is big mistake for Bmw Motorsport.

I feel BMW is going for a first with this engine:

Individual throttle bodies in a production turbo i6. That's going to allow for the response (no turbo lag) and high redline.

BMW is already past that throttle bodie thing its called Valvetronic you have it on your F10 M5 aswell.
BMW first introduced it back in 2001 on the 316ti compact no need for throttle bodies with this system.

The technology continues to evolve. The S63Tu can rev to 7200 RPM, and they will go higher with S55. They have never had a compelling reason to push above 7000 RPM until recently because M engines used ITB and VANOS. But Valvetronic is key to BMW's turbocharging strategy going forward.

It does seem a lot similiar to the present M3.
I just expected development to show greater changes.
Still very good but some want more!

It seems that the performance envelope of new sports cars/coupes is just getting more and more impressive. It used to be that fast vehicles were hitting 60 in the low 4's, but it seems everything that is coming out now is sub 4. The new Vette alone has 460 hp and 465 tq with the performance exhaust. Mustangs and Camaro's are getting more potent and I am curious to see how M will approach the new M3/M4. I realize that a motor and its power is just one of the many variables that makes up speed, etc., however, it would seem that you have to get more power just to stay in the game.

+1 or at least a firm date for more key specifications like the Frankfurt auto show. A "concept" with engine and steering specs would be awesome to look forward to at Frankfurt.
