Are you using a spacer or does it appear that a spacer might help?

We designed our new 19-inch forgings for the M3/M4 that are able to bring these tolerances up to 6-8mm. A much safer margin.

I'm glad to see its only cosmetic so far and haven't seen any reported rotor damage yet. Not sure what BMW can do to correct this.
Have you released those wheels yet?

Hmmm.....interesting question! No difference in barrel circumference if you pushed the wheel out 10-12 mm but I wonder if the physics of pebble ingress and ejection would change? Just thinking out loud, this may rank as the stupidest thought I've ever had lol.

Haha no not stupid. I think we're on to something! The inner barrel isn't the same circumference front to back on my E92 wheels; there are channels or variations, if that makes sense.

I've just had my car in after a loud grating sound came out of the front right wheel arch. The dealer said it was a stone that had got caught in the mechanism. They are returning it tomorrow and said it will be covered by warranty. It's the first time I've ever had that experience on a car.

I have standard wheels and brakes and not the CCBs.

Was it lodged between the wheel barrel and the caliper or between the caliper and something else?

First time I have seen this thread here. I made a thread about this 6 months ago and was concerned about safety. Here is my thread: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1043631

That was when I got my first scratch, 6 months later I have like 10 inside my right wheel and 3 or 4 in my left wheel. My dealer made pictures but told me I shouldn't worry about safety. However I do plan on complaining again when I need new tyres. I wasn't trying to get new wheels because I am sure I would damage them again within a week or so.

It's impossible this doesnt weaken the wheel so I am still a bit concerned.

Here is the picture from 6 months ago, keep in mind it looks alot worse now haha

Interesting. Your old thread left off with more concern about damage to the rotors rather than the wheels. Damage to either because of a design flaw will be a problem for BMW no matter how you cut it. Safety concern is still a question no one has really answered yet but as I've previously stated, that type of opinion should be reserved for someone in the business of designing/manufacturing the wheels or brake systems used on these M's.

Any update thus far on the issue, Geordie? Hoping for a reasonable and prompt engineering resolution on this problem.

My F80 is in production now with an est. completion date of 4/27. It's too tight of a timeframe for me to be optimistic that my order will have any retrofitted fix for this problem.

This is starting to really bother me. I'm looking into HRE R101s, but maybe I'll get my money back from BMW first.

What HRE's size are you looking for?

I ordered 19's for my car that the vendor advised will clear the CCBs. Wheels should be here in 3 weeks or so, and the car about 2 months after that.....

I may see if ACM can test fit the wheels on a CCB car to see what the clearance looks like - I'm definitely concerned about non-oem wheels getting this same damage and then having zero recourse to get the wheel replaced. If oem wheel is damaged, BMW should cover it, but not if aftermarket.

Same thing here - roads in our area just aren't conducive to thin ass rubber. BTW - OT, but your car looks great in the BSM w/CCB - Great Call.

Dunno if you remember me but we met at the Oyster Bay meet in December. I look forward to attending later in the summer with mine!

You've gotta think that they'll be taken care of by BMW when you go to Rallye, right? I hope OP can get an AG authorized fix to this issue off the ground, but I've still got a while before I'll be personally concerned if a correction isn't provided.

The stone get stuck at the bottom of the wheel rim in the barrel area and then the forward wheel rotation takes the stone into the Caliper which are mounted very low and rearward. Clearance is about 3-4mm in this area. This means it's likely to happen regularly, which it has!!
I'm glad to hear I'm not alone in this. But I'm not glad we are in this together LOL. About 500 miles into this new ride, I took off and about 40 mph on the local street, I started to break and then ... SCREEEETTCHHH!!! I freaked out. Got louder and louder until I just pulled over to a complete stop. Friend of mine has an idea and look. Before you know it he already found it. Large stone got caught. Eventually came out after taking off to the gas station. I went about 50 yards before it popped out. I had to take off otherwise we would have been run over.

Thank you for the post!

Yeah Rallye already knows. I spoke to my CA he said a fix is already in the works. They'd replace my wheel but it'll just happen again. If it goes for another few months without a fix I'll push for new wheels. The roads should be cleaned up from the winter.
