19" vs 20" ... why is most people go with 20" on their M3/M4?

After searching a lot on wheel specs threads, i have noticed that most people are running 20" instead of 19" and i'm kinda wondering why?

To me the best size looks to be 19" and i have always hated on big diameter rims and now i see everyone on 20's so im kinda confused loll

So im curious to know if there's any advantage to go with that size on the F80 platform?

Thanks

We've sold more 20" than 19" in 2017 for the F8x. Some buys 20" to re-use their ZCP tires and other buys 20" for better look over 19".

Track guys, street racers, and guys living in cities with lots of potholes still prefer 19".

19" front and 20" rear are also a good option to run harder to find tire combo. Like RE-71 265/35/19 front and 295/30/20 rear.

Im maybe the only one who thinks that 20" looks too big haha but i do ... on the m5/m6 maybe the 20's would look alright but i was just curious to know why there's that much people on 20" and you answered the question very well thanks

You're not the only one who thinks that. I have a few who replaced their 20" ZCP to 19" because their 20" 666 were too heavy and the ride was harsh.

19" below looks very meaty and sexy. That's the beauty of modding, you can make it to your own taste.

Main reason I switched over was tire selection. I had 20" before and now happily with 19". I think other advantages include weight reduction, improved ride quality, and tires being slightly cheaper.

Just FYI. I switched from 19s to 20s and the ride became less harsh. But then I moved from 255/35/19 275/35/19 Contis to 265/30/20 285/30/20 P4s AND stock springs to Eibach Pro. The combo definitely less harsh.

I've had 18's, 19's and 20's on this platform. Look-wise and for street driving I actually prefer 20's. This is a big car and it fills the wheel well the best without needing the car to be super low. Most of the epic looking cars on 19's tend to be dumped, I know mine was and the ride quality was more compromised than running 20's at a higher ride height. For track use I'd do the 18's.

My opinion of course.

20s look so much better for aftermarket wheels. I don't care at all for the 20 inch 666s though, I prefer the stock 19s (437?). It's all purely subjective, sure, but the sales numbers for aftermarket wheels should be a good metric to gauge what's generally considered to be preferred.

20s have the proportions right sidewall to wheel.

19s are passable only if it's a flat faced, one-piece wheel (e.g. BBS FI-R).

Anyone that throws shade at the F8X's OEM wheels has an agenda. They're all forged and backed by a factory warranty released worldwide for all seasons and roads. No aftermarket wheel has to cope with that scale and volume.

I have a set of 20" with a stepped lip i find that they look to small in 19" and on top they are only offering 20" on this particular set of wheels.

Monkey see, monkey do! It also helps that ZCP models comes with 20" standard with some opting to downsize to 19"s.

Regarding ride quality, if you don't drive like Speed Racer on the streets you might want to consider switching tires. I recently switch ZCP 20" MPSS tires in 265/30/20 & 285/30/20 to Nitto all season tires 275/30/20 & 295/30/20 and the ride is definitely less harsh. The trade off is all season tires are not as sticky as performance summer tires. The upside is that the ride is less harsh and tread wear is better. I'm in a climate that does get well below freezing during the winter months and snows but I don't plan to drive on snowy days, only cold days as necessary.

For those who tracks their cars, all season tires isn't an option. They would be better off with dedicated track wheels/tires while cruising around town with all season tires if they're looking for more comfort vs sporty handling.

Hate to disagree with you but going from MPSS to all season tires is such a bad decision in my opinion.. but you make your own move; All season tires are a jack of all traits master of none. They aren't great in the snow/rain, they aren't great in the dry.. MPSS can handle wet conditions perfectly fine outside of snow / ice.

20 inch for me. rides great, nice steering response and fits the wheel wells great. a 20ěnch on f80 is equal to a 19inch on e90 in regards to tire sidewall and proportions. 19`s will however give you more tire choices

So true. It was amazing the first time I replaced all-season tires with summer tires and had a rainy day.
IMO if you actually need a different tire for snow, you want a real winter tire on cheap rims. All-seasons suck in all seasons.
But if you live someplace that gets winter but no thunderstorms and you don't have the ability to store and swap tires when winter comes and goes, I see the appeal of a decent tire all year.

19's are the best size. Mentioned above, better ride, tire look and selection than 20's. But also clears many of the big brake kits too.

I believe there are 2 kinds of 18's that will clear the Brembo 380mm kit and AP racing kit (9668 if I'm not mistaken)

When you down size to 19 with 30 profile tire and said it's better ride than 20 with 30 profile?:
