RE71 >>>>>> R888R for track work

It's not recommended to mix and match tires, but I don't think you'll explode into a fiery ball if you do

Yea I'm just gonna get the re71r's in the front since they don't come in rear sizes for my M4 CS. Also, do I need to change pads or fluid at all? My car is equipped with carbon ceramic brakes.

I ran RE71 on the stock CS wheels, 265 front and 295 rear.

If you are new to tracking you are ok pad-wise. Plan on getting the Pagid RSC pads, they are meant for the CCB rotors and help the rotors live longer.

For fluid, I like using SRF but you can also just bleed with OEM fluid. Again, if you are new to the track you are most likely fine to not change it

Thoughts on removing face helmet shield? Any reason to keep it attached?

If you drive with windows down on the track then you're bound to have something fly in the car and hit you in the cheek or eye if it hasn't happened already.

Not to mention the shield has fire protection benefits, but I doubt you're wearing a fire suit so that bit is likely moot.

I'd keep it and learn how to drive with the shield down.

Random question I should have asked years ago, but here goes...

I run my pressures at around 26 to 27 cold, 33 to 34 hot on track all around.

Should I be running the rears higher than the fronts, and if so, what's the reason why?

Would it make sense to run 33 front, 34 rear than trying to have them all dialed to the same pressure?

I run all 4 at the same hot pressure, then go rotating them so who knows what ends up where

Great. Thanks Shadow.

Shadow, do you have photos of your F80 or a list of mods for it that you wouldn't mind posting?
I'm thinking about making some big changes for next year and want some ideas.

Sure, it isn't a huge list.
We picked up two M4 GTS for the 2022 season, so we may start a build thread for those. Big plans!

BW front thrust bushings/'monoballs'/brake bushing
BW spec MCS 3WR full coilover
Hotchins sways - do not buy these, I hear BW will release something that actually fits our cars
BW-Alcon front and rear bbk
4 sets of BW TA5R 18x10.5 et36 wheels for square setups. I'd rather the TEAL16 but they don't have a 10.5 fitment for our cars
BW race studs
BK harness bar
BK seat mounts and oem sliders
OMP HTE-R 400
If not listed here, stock

Nice! About time my man, and doubling up straightaway! Congrats. Look forward to your progress with them.

I’m curious, why start with a GTS? Extra power in the stock tune?

It has stuff we'd want to add anyway:
-half cage
-CF vented hood
-more stock power, as we don't want to tune it*
-full titanium exhaust is nice
-no need to tune the diff/DCT or steering
-carry the M4 GTS flag at track days
-COVID pricing for regular Ms is disconnected with reality, but GTSs are more in line with what we expect
-OLED tail lights
-extra 0.1g lateral acceleration due to more oil capacity
-lightweight audio system, lightweight door cards
-baby aero
-CCBs, which I will be putting on my street E92 and E90. Who said CCBs are useless?

One could argue that plenty of the things the GTS has and we like could be retrofitted or will be superceded by future mods. We agree, but modding does not give someone a GTS even if it produces a car that is faster.

* running the CS stock, in 7k miles we have gone through spark plugs to the point they took out the coils as well. Tuning would only make this worse. The E9X tuning world is a shitshow and we expect the F8X one is the same

Ha, very creative use of the CCBs! That’s thinking outside the box…

I’d stay away from the OLED tails on a track car, they are terribly expensive in case of. And since the main difference between the GTS power (sans water) and the CS/ZCP/Civic ones is literally an engine tune, you can always tune the more basic cars to GTS level at the very least, safely.

I’ve run BM3 for the last 15k miles and only 1 set of plugs at 30k miles, original coils. I didn’t think that tuning alters the duty cycles on the coils, or the intensity of the spark. Anyway, I think there are many more - an order of magnitude or two more - tuned F8x cars than E9x cars out there. What is your worst scenario or concern?

In any case, they’re awesome cars and if I didn’t favor a sedan, I’d be all over one. Did pricing on the non GTS jump up that much recently?

If there's an accident, the OLEDs are the least of our concerns. And the cars are insured for every day they do.

The water injection reduces IAT and thermal stress on the engine. Without water the GTS is a ZCP, but it will always run with water

In E9Xs, it is now possible to read what tunes have in them and as expected, plenty have all kinds of crazy shit like disabled adaptations, forced timing, etc etc. I expect F8X tunes to be the same.

Also, remember wear is exponentially related to track time. You can probably do 50k track miles on a F8X at a 2:20 VIR laptime. At 2:10, much fewer. At 2:05, even fewer. At 2:00, you can expect to be replacing the engine every couple seasons.

Once you go through a couple engines, three S65s in our case, you start to be more sensitive to this stuff. And keep in mind that your current spark plug durability is based on your previous times, now that you are going under 2:10 you will see something very different.
In 7k miles our spark plugs weren't just 'bad', they were able to throw CELs and enough combustion got past them to destroy two coils. We plan on doing this every 5k miles in the future.

We strongly favor sedans as well, but once you are crossing 160mph in VIR for example you start thinking a half cage is useful and once you add that the sedan becomes less useful.

In 2018 we could find cheap F8Xs for 35k, during the pandemic that has gone up to almost 50k for a bottom of the barrel car.

Do you have a racing team of some sorts that you compete with or what am I missing here? Two GTS' for a new track season is commitment.

Yesterday at Lime Rock I cracked my wind shield on Sam Posey straight. It must have been a wheel weight kicked up by a Camaro while I was riding his bumper waiting for the point-by.

While the impact was out of my sight line it was still jarring and enough to convice me to got visor down from now on.

PSA - tape your wheel weights.

If you need a good glass guy let me know

Absolutely, although it's hot and miserable with a closed helmet it is the only way to go. Impacts can be really hard and will take your eye out without issues
