Seems like all the people owning the current M3 are upset to see the V8 go away (including me) and people who haven't heard the S65 engine are happy.

Going to keep my NA V8 e92 M3 for a long time! Rest of you FI fans keep fixing your HPFP.

You can tell who's a new kid around BMW's and who isn't. The new kids whine about BMW getting rid of the V8, which honestly isn't a surprise or a bad thing. I6 is where BMW started. V8's don't belong in M3s. Heck if you're a true purist V8's don't belong in M5's, either.

It's been a while without a I6, but it will be welcome return. V8's are banished back to the 5/6/7 series.

BMW = I6
If you thought different, you're wrong.

May I also remind I6 haters that Alpina built a Biturbo M30 with 355hp. Now that's not a lot by today's standards but that engine was built before the fall of the Berlin Wall on a base engine that was created in the late 1960's. There will be no shortage of power.

well, even if it is twin turbo or tri turbo, with BMW's new patent on the electric turbo, just how "pure" is the new I6?

yet, even that, in reality, isn't the most important part - the key here is the sum of the parts - that is the what makes a car deserve that M badge in today's market, imho.

I don't understand why it has to come to S65 vs. N54 or turbo vs. NA all the time. At the time of E46 M3 CSL (maybe the best M car of all time imo) BMW felt like they reached the limits of NA inline sixes and they increased the displacement and number of cylinders with V8 M3 and V10 M5. It was first the M5 and the S65 was just a development of the V10 with 2 less cylinders. It is just the same scheme, same play all over again, first the F10 M5 with a twin turbo eight cylinder replacing the NA V10 and now an inline six twin turbo replacing the NA V8 in their respective models. Why is it a shock even? BMW know what they are doing but some people in these forums don't seem to have a clue about why they are whining just because they are hallucinating with a beautiful engine noise. Even Bugatti Veyron has four turbos if I remember correctly and only Lambo and Ferrari makes great and capable NA engines today, but can we or should we afford one Lambo or Ferrari unless we live in Cote d'Azur?

And when is the last time BMW disappointed drivers with a new M3?

agreed. the only constant in life is change; car manufacturers are no different. new technologies enter in the automotive industry on a seemingly daily basis. even ferrari is using gm's mag suspensions. in order to survive, car manufacturers must play to the global zeitgeist - which is fine blend between horsepower and efficiency. i mean, look at the new gt500 - 662 hp and it dodges the gas guzzler tax? more power to ford for being innovative.

Damage is already done. V8 or I6 does not matter. Damage is called forced induction. It does not belong in the car that is meant to be tracked where throttle response and linear power delivery are important. FI will add complexity to M cars, increase maintenance costs on used cars and make them unreliable on the track because of limp mode, since everyone and their mother will raise the boost through software.

Again, as of next year there will be ZERO naturally aspirated cars in the ENTIRE BMW lineup. That is messed up.

The E9X V8 is awesome and I'll miss it. Light, nimble and fast, with turbos that spool NOW isn't half bad. I'll take one!

If im not mistaken the GTR is turbo and destroys the M3 around the track

Turbos suck?!?

Idk what goes on in peoples head on here really

The fastest M cars are

Turboed Inline 6 e30
Turboed inline 6 e46

See a trend?

Actually make that 2 5's sharing that V8..

What's with all these new/sham accounts popping up. The 'M' marketing brigade has arrived, this is a level 5 inferno.

"BMW's are fast/supposed to be fast". When did that start? I didn't know BMW markets their cars as fast. Could it be? Sure but no one buys a BMW or M car to say it's "fast". It starts and ends at balance of all aspects of the car.

Anyway with this news, anyone thinking 1M but way better? I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE REVEAL!

If this was a 4.0 or 4.2L I6 NA I don't think there would be any complaints, at all. We would be in beemer heaven.
But they trump this as "bringing back the inline 6".. but I am biased, I feel the I6 with turbo(s) is more of a "bast*rd six" (praying this will pass the censors)
The problem is they keep downsizing the engine and telling us its more and more, when the only thing that is increasing are corporate profits and marketing expenses.

but these halo cars aren't to appease just us enthusiasts; they have to appeal to the general population as well. even if they don't, they reel in interested customers to test their other cars.

yes, it's business, but i quote one of the previous posts - when has BMW ever disappointed with the way the majority receives their M cars?

not everyone's going to love them, but that's not the point.

Get your stories straight son. I'm quoting an official BMW press release (you did too, FTL), that says N55. Then you link to some confused blogger.

Ok, I will stop blaming BMW for not giving me the engine I want at a price I can afford. I can only blame myself for not being able to afford those lovely porsche/ferrari/lambourgini NAs.

i didn't mean to come off that in that negative sense - you're absolutely right, i'd love to have one of those brilliant NAs...but BMWs clientele is much more diverse, so they, unfortunately, have to please more people with their products. such is the life.
