Engine and intercooler seem higher up from the ground than I would expect. I guess that's why there's a power bump in the hood. Turbos must be on the bottom (as expected), but I can't help but wonder what's beneath what we're seeing. Maybe a second stacked intercooler? That doesn't make sense, but if you look in the second photo, there is more plastic endcap type material beneath the intercooler.

Sure does, but that won't matter much - it's the size of radiator and pump that support the IC that you should care about.

why would you think that? if you think about it, inline 6 is a long engine and can't really benefit from V-config packaging. It was shown that V8 in E92 is lighter than I6 in E46. I am not saying it will not be improvement in weight to E46 but it will not be necessarily lighter. Add turbos to that config and all that comes with it you can't be really serious about 100lb weight saving.

That's one crowded and confined engine bay. Never the less, hope all this engineering delivers which I dont doubt BMW would.

On a more serious note, how effective are air-to-water intercoolers on turbocharged cars? Better than a traditional air-to-air cooler? I can't think of many examples of this kind of setup.
It's the sexiest engine bay imo I love to see it without cover

It seems they utilized all the open space and managed to fit one airbox per turbo.

Did we ever get an answer on the hood? Is it a bulge or a vent? From these pics, I don't see how the vent would be all that functional.

The S54 was an iron block while the S65 is an aluminum block. If the now I6 is an aluminum block, it could still weigh less than the S65, even with all of this stuff bolted to it. I don't think it will be noticeably lighter, but it likely won't be heavier.

The car would surely have the normal air-air at the front so the addition of an air-water can only help

I am not so sure there are two turbos. One intercooler intake hose could be for a single twin scroll turbocharger, the other for the electric supercharger. The water cooled intercooler is a great idea. Water is 800 times denser than air. It cools so efficiently.

It looks like it's going to be a real bitch to change spark plugs. It looks like you'll have to remove a lot of stuff to gain access.

M3/M4 Engine

Does anyone think the engine looks the same? I don't. I believe they will give this engine a proper S designation.

Anyone think its larger than a 3.0L?
