F82 30k Service

Hey guys, need some advice here.

My m4 needs a 30k mile service and my SA tells me it also needs an induction service and coolant refresh...BMW says oil change only.

What is your take? SA trying to up-sell not needed maintenance?

Thanks

Ray

just had 30k done. They changed oil, plugs, and air filter. he asked about throttle/injector cleaning. Didn't mention coolant at all although I asked them to look for leaks.

What is an induction service? Either way, you don't need it nor the coolant service.

I don't know for sure but I think it is a walnut blasting for carbon buildup.

Same thing as walnut blasting but they use chemicals instead.

Got it, definitely should not need that. I have yet to see a single instance of carbon buildup posted on the forum.

1. Attached below is the actual CB schedule taken right off my SA's screen one month ago.
2. I've not heard of anything other than walnut blast as the remedy for carbon buildup in the intakes. I'd be surprised if very many M4's have had that done yet, my brother had it done on his 335 at 71K miles. I will be installing a catch can the minute I'm off warranty in order to avoid that as long as I can.
3. The coolant interval controversy has been going on now for a decade or so, but it may be interesting to note that when BMW went to "lifetime fill", the part number for the coolant did not change. Later, the marketing guys finally saw the comedy and changed the part number. Oh, and by the way, the interval was two years before BMW started paying for the maintenance. I change my coolant every two years (time-based) and I'm glad to pay for it.
4. Hydraulic fluid is notoriously hydroscopic, with that process related to time not mileage. BMW will pay to change the hydraulic fluid every two years after the first service, and that's good. I am very happy to pay to change the hydraulic fluid in the intervening year, making my cycle 12 months.

The caveat to all this is that I plan to keep my car for 8 to 10 years. Not that long ago, I kept a 540i for 17 years. The guy I sold it to is still driving it.
For leased cars, all bets are off. This is the main reason I wouldn't buy a CPO'd M-car, the majority of which are off-lease. I believe it prudent to think that most Lessees are not inclined to do BMW any favors.

Pretty cool how low maintenance modern vehicles are and especially high perf ones like the M4. Those service 1 and 2 intervals requiring valve adjustments in the E46 M3 were a pain in the arse.

And a big fat middle fing to peasant minded service reps. Who the f do they think they are? lol smh

I am with you on the "old school" fluid change methodology as I plan to keep my car for a while, too. My car turns 2yrs old this December and I plan to change out the coolant as well.

Not sure why you are waiting until after warranty to put an OCC on the car though. My experience has been that the OCC does catch some stuff - and I am still stock. I have had my OCC on since ~2000 miles or so (I have 19k on the clock now). Also, even though these engines seem to be doing well as far as carbon buildup is concerned, I still use a chemical valve cleaner at every oil change (CRC Intake Valve Cleaner) to maintain cleanliness, which is every 5k miles for me.

1. CC is not on because I've been unable to get a sufficiently straight answer from SA's at three different AD's regarding potential warranty issues. Otherwise, the CC would have been on after the 1200 mile service. If you've gotten definitive advice on this, I'd love to hear it.
2. I also use Techron, but less often than I used to because this is direct injection so I think the intakes don't benefit as much as they would with port injection. Not sure they'd benefit at all tbh, but I figure it can't hurt and "maybe" is a sufficient reason.

So tell me more about your CC: what have you found in there? What have your intervals been, assuming you've racked enough miles to have emptied it more than once?

Edit: I should say that I think the reason I can't get a straight answer on CC is because AD's are reluctant to give advice on an illegal act.

You shouldn't need to pay for anything out of pocket if dealer recommends any service. Your 2015-2016 model year should have maintenance plan effective and able to cover maintenance still..

When it comes to any non-BMW modification, you never will get any "official" answer regarding warranty other than it "may" (or will) void your warranty in some way (either partially or all - depending on the mod). It really comes down to your comfort level and the relationship you have with your SA. My M3 has been to the dealer for all routine service with the OCC installed (except for the 1200 mi service) and I have not had any issues. I also have a good working relationship with my SA as well.

I think the OCC is doing it's job - I empty it at every oil change (which is every 5k miles for me). More info in this thread here: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1363533&page=2

Using Techtron (or any similar quality fuel system cleaner additive) along with branded gas will definitely help to keep your fuel injectors clean (I use a bottle of Liqui Moly Jectron every 2500 miles). But as you already mentioned, it will do nothing for the intake valves due to the GDI design of the engine, that is why I use the CRC stuff.
