No pipes, just tuning?

Living in CA I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t want to put on/remove piping from the car every time a smog comes around… so, what’s the best option for a HP/tq jump that doesn’t require ethanol? JB4 tune or similar?

Would love to hear some options for the above circumstances.

Thanks.

You can still tune with BM3 and don't need to run it on E. You can run a stage 2 with your stock cats, probably best not to run that with E.

Thanks!

I thought the JB4 might be a better option because as a piggyback unit it could just be removed when desired.. no?

You can just as easily flash back to OEM and lock the DME.
Plus (just me) there’s less physical intrusion of a tune versus physical device piggyback and tapping into wires.

BM3 = Bootmod3 ie Protuningfreaks

Not sure what downpipes will still pass smog (high flow catted) such as Turner or others.

I've never heard of aftermarket downpipes that pass smog because even when catted they usually are much more breathable than stock which the dmv doesnt like. Just make sure that everything you buy is CARB (CA air resource board) compliant. That way you can make mods "legally"

As far as tunes go, JB4 or BM3 will let you go from a tune to a stock flash very easily with the app

AA GESI are the only ones I know that won’t throw a CEL. Issue is if the ref/smog person checks for visual and CARB sticker.

Isn’t JB4 just a plug in? Or you’re saying you actually have to rewrite?

Regarding the pipes that will help but will likely pass smog, will those have a huge impact on how much power is made if I do a tune? Or should the tune be fine on the stock pipes?

Thanks

Is JB4 a plug in now? That's awesome.

Are you making fun of me or is it really a “plug in”?

No. I'm just going off what you stated. I know JB4 used to require wire taps but if it's plug and play, even better.

Can anyone else comment on the ease of applying and removing the JB4?

Is it considered a “stage 2” device… whatever that means?

Is it affective without boltons / pipes to avoid smog issues?

Any info is appreciated

Why not just go into the search section and search "smog", "bm3", and "bootmod3". There are hundreds of threads and replies that will cover every question you will ever have

I like discussing things with people… don’t have much time to go hunting. I will do that too, but I do appreciate replies to this post. So thanks, and looking forward to more input.

Seems like with bm3 in my personal case, with respect to abilities of flashing on my own with a laptop or something, I would be taking it in to a shop/tuner to flash it and then flash it back to stock every time I had to pass smog.

Can anyone confirm that with the JB4 you just disconnect a device and simply plug it back in once it’s been dyno tuned?

Can't comment on JB4 and I haven't done any further research but with BM3 you do not a laptop and can use your phone

How long are you keeping the f8x? Last time I checked the CA DMV website, there is a rule stating cars newer than 8 model years old don’t need a check

This is the reason why I decided to get midpipes

I’d hate to have to take them off when it came time to smog. I plan on keeping my m4 for a while, so I will eventually have to take smog into consideration.. might as well set it up the way I will always have it.

I’d still go to a tuner to have it done. :-)

Does anyone know if a video that shows how easy it is to remove the JB4 and put it back on after smog?

Also, with Bm3 would I simply hit an on/off button on an iPhone to un flash/reflash to the previously 1 time dyno tuned settings that were initially setup by a tuner?

On my old M235i it took me about an hour to install and 30min to uninstall. Main time was spent routing the wiring from engine bay to obd2 port.
