My new to me 2018 M3 CS

Plus my 335is....really enjoying this car in the short amount of time I've had it. While I have your attention I'm wondering if the bimmertech android auto solution is the only option available for adding AA to use with idrive?

I thought all 2018+ had CarPlay and Android Auto automatically?

For my 2017, I did the Bimmertech CarPlay retrofit. Had to take the stereo out and install an antenna behind the unit. Took 15 mins. Then had them remotely code (aka unlock) CarPlay; took another 15 mins.

Maybe all you need in your 2018 is a coding unlock; you might have the antenna. When on Bimmertech, the support team will probably be able to tell you if you need the antenna or not.

Still researching this, but I think bmw was further along on car play than AA. I hope I'm wrong.

Unfortunately it's not the case...
I have a 2018 M4 CS that did not come with CarPlay, and no antenna.

Would love to unlock it, but don't feel like having the stero out.

It's not particularly difficult - all you need is a screw driver with the correct bit and a credit card to pry the trim off. The stereo comes out with a few screws, you pull it out like 9 inches, plug the antenna into a port that's very obvious, slide the stereo back in, screws, pop trim back in.

** I know the CS has a different climate system so this could vary on a CS. All I'm trying to say is that it's a very easy mod if you're willing to pay the few hundred $$ to get AA/CP. After getting CarPlay, I don't know how I ever lived without it. Life changing.

Congrats fellow Atlantan on the new CS. It was by far the best M3 I owned, arm rest and comfort access be damned!

Lol, the lack of arm rest is my biggest adjustment for sure. Thanks man!

From what I understand, that means you have the antenna but the original owner didn't pay to have BMW 'unlock' it for you. Which should mean that yes, BimmerTech will 'code' (basically paying a few $hundred to unlock) CarPlay for you. Hit up their support, they can check what you need with your VIN.

I thought it would be an issue, but 12k miles later, not once did I actually notice it as an issue. With this car, I'm either super focused doing spirited driving with hands on the paddles or manually shifting with hand on the shifter.

I've got an M5CS inbound. Will land at the dock on the 5th. I hope to have it by the end of next week.
