Warranty is ending soon - need advice
My warranty is ending at the end of August.
I don't have any issues with the car that I can see myself. Is there something I should check before the coverage is running out? Are there problems these cars have that I could catch? Thanks! - 2018 F80

inspect your coolant reservoirs for signs of leaks/low fluid. have the dealer just put the car on the lift and inspect your suspension components (control arms, end links, bushings, etc) and also look at the diff bushings as they're prone to cracking and leaking if you have v1. if you have the mpe have it inspected for cracks if you have v1. I recently finally localized the rattle in the rear deck and it's coming from the child seat buckle covers. if you have any rattles take the tech with you for a test drive and show them

Go to an Indy shop and have them perform a full check of the car. My warranty ended a week ago and I had this inspection completed for $120 before it ended. They found a leaking rear axle seal. Days later my blower fan stopped working which required a control module to be replaced. Thankfully I was still under warranty. I only have 13k miles on my 2016 F80.

Check the front turbo/air intake gasket! Remove the skid plate from the bottom of the car and look directly up at the front turbo. After 4 years there is a decent chance the O-Ring on the intake side of the turbo has gone stale and you will be leaking blow by oil out of the turbo. EZ fix to just replace the the O-Ring but a pain in the ass if you’re not comfortable with DIY and disassembling parts of the engine bay… easier to have the dealer do it.

The last year of F80 is pretty solid and question is do you plan to keep the car for long period? If yes then I would get the extended warranty.

Before my F80 warranty expired in March I had them inspect the car for a coolant smell I couldn't locate, and said that I had found oil leakage on the pan underneath the skid plate . They ended up replacing the radiator and valve cover gasket as well as replacing the M3 badges and upgrading them to the 2018 version. I told them I saw some leakage on the output shaft of the differential but they couldn't replicate it. I still smell the coolant, but I'm assuming its a light leak on the overflow tank - even though I can't see any white residue on the seam of the tank.

Do you think Platinum is overkill or is Gold is enough?

It really depends on the cost difference.
Gold does not cover entertainment system, radio, navigation. The plan has only limited coverage for electrical components.

The difference is about ~$800.

Tell them there was a puddle under the car and that you're not sure what it is. This forces them to check all your lines for leaks.

I would go with Platinum since its cover nav and stereo.

Despite everything you read on here, this car and engine is pretty built proof. I would save the $5 grand and use it for crank bolt capture install and then save the rest for a rainy day/contingency/regular maintenance fund. I will bet you will come out on top.
Only thing I really worry about with these cars nowadays, is the electronics going bad. My iDrive hard drive went bad on my 2009 335i and that was the most expensive repair completed. She’s now 110,000 miles and still going strong. |

My car had an oil filter leak, valve cover gasket leak and I've heard the oil pain leak is common.
Completely stock 2016 f82 Dct at 40k miles. I've heard chances are that you're gonna get at least one of these leaks, especially the valve cover gasket, before 50k miles. Keep in mind when I say leak I mean there's very slight leakage and discoloration (oil leaking out very mildly) around the given part, it's not letting out enough oil for you to get a low oil sign. Also, your dealer would be happy to do work for you under warranty unless they already get a ton of business. I choose to go to the small family owned BMW dealership near me rather than the massive one because they love getting warranty jobs as BMWUSA pays them well for it, and they don't get much business due to location versus the huge dealer is always backed up. |
