driver side window tint pitting
hey have any of you run into this issue where there are small pits or even scratches to your driver side window tint or other window tints?
i had a 328i and tinted the driver side window and over time it would get pits and also scratches. i was hoping that it wouldn't happen with the m3 but i just noticed small pits in the tint. no scratches yet.

that's not what i meant.
for those who have installed window tint, has your tint ever got scratched or pitted because you roll up/down the window? Is this a common occurrence? I have only had it happen on the front driver side window but not on the passenger windows.

you are talking straight vertical (top to bottom) scratches, right? If horizontal, that's from you wiping it to clean the windows, etc
Might need a thinner tint film, or felt on the inside of the doors. some films are .8ML, some are 1.2, etc Porsche Panamera has this problem and the doors need felts added to prevent tint from getting scratched. But pits, no. Tint wont pit. If there is a lot of pitting, I would bet its dirt under the film. Do you have a picture? |

on my old car i have vertical lines and also the pits. The thing is i rarely if ever roll down my windows all the way so I don't know how the rocks got in to scratch and pit the tint.
in my new car there is just minor pits. But i always wipe the interior windows when i wash my car. but for some reason they bits of dirt get in. And it can't be just dust. it is like sand or something.

I don't think so. I have had the tint for 20 months and the putting was in the 18th or 19th month. It can't be because of poor installation. And I never noticed any bumps or debris inside the film on that window.
Maybe I closed my door too hard when the window was down.....

No, I'm not hitting the window with my seat belt. There are about 5 pits in the tiny. I didn't take photos of all of them but you can see what I am talking about in the photos below. The pits are right above my fingernail.

that's from you/something hitting the window. we see it all the time on cars that have tint. You may not notice it, but something is hitting the window when you are getting out whether its the seatbelt, the ring on the hand or watch on the wrist.
tint will not just start pitting like that. its pretty clear it is not a BMW or tint thing considering we see it on tesla, on bmw, on Porsche, Ferrari, rolls Royce, etc. Plus, its happened on both your personal cars. Hope you can figure it out. I'd really check the seatbelt theory without consciously thinking about NOT hitting the window. If you take off the belt differently than you always have been, you will not eliminate that from being the cause. get out the way way/speed/everything |

Thanks, Eric. You are probably right. Got to watch out for my seatbelt and gently reel it in. Window tints are so thin. I would have thought they would be more durable.
