BMS Intake

I just bought this. I was reading some reviews on various forums. It seems people have issues on startup in cold weather. Granted, these seemed to be relegated to other platforms (235i). Anyone run the BMS DCI in an S55? Any issues?

I bought specifically for sound, I'm aware there will be zero gains. TIA!

I had issues with cold start with these. Ando at Bms said this is normal (in sub 40 degree temp) due to increased airflow.

But when you install, you'll notice that the right side intake's maf sensor is about 12" from the stock location. I switched just the right side intake back to stock (left the Bms intake on the left side) and no more issues. I'll install the right side again when the weather gets warmer, just a hassle to do this.

Good to know, thanks.

The intake is on our car and have had no issues even down to 5-10 degrees.

I posted about this concern in another thread but didn't update. So here it is: I had 2 weird cold starts for the first 2 days then everything was normal after that. It definitely got below 40 degrees here. So maybe it just took time for the car to adjust? Hell if I know, I'm just glad it runs fine because I turn off the music and roll the window down just to hear the "tsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss"

I installed the intake today. I have three concerns.

#1 the car stumbled on cold start with the intake installed. Temperature says 54* out.
#2 the intercooler hose is what I consider dangerously close to hot metal
#3 the MAF on the right side intake is not completely flush like the left side. I think it may be an inherent design flaw (undersized?)

The intake I received, is what I think is the "new design", as it has the ability to bolt down the right side intake. This forces the intake to install slightly "rolled aft" of what I typically see of people that have installed it on this forum. Has anyone been able to seat the right side MAF flush? Anyone else concerned with intercooler hose? Fix? Thanks!

The MAF needs to be flush in order for it to work properly. I had no issues seating my sensor. Make sure you screw it in rotating from screw to screw so it goes down even.

Some cars have issues with startup in cold weather, most don't

It sounds that the intake was not installed properly, as Mike said MAF needs to be flush. Post some pics so we can take a look

My issue was caused by (in my opinion) an improperly welded tube. The tube had a little lip on the bottom precluding flush MAF fit, no matter how I pushed it in there. BMS is doing a stand up job of sending me a new tube. I'll let you know how the replacement works out.

In other news...I now know what a cammed M3 might sound like.

Did you try the lube?

I saw the pic you sent as I think we have been corresponding about it. The sensor itself is much smaller then the overhang. Try the lube and see if it fixes the issue. Might save you the hassle of sending stuff back and forth with BMS. Should take 2 min Old / new engine oil works great. Just a little dab on the o-ring.

Mine required the lube to slip in as it was a tight fit when I was installing on our shop F80.

MAF cars need to re-learn.

I'd actually recommend that people should disconnect their battery for 10 minutes when installing the intake so the car can do a complete relearn the idle from the get-go. MAF sensors are very sensitive and a new intake is a significant change.

Other platforms require a tune for an intake on a MAF car so these little hiccups are somewhat normal.

so much for BMS intake issue. Car bogged again on cold start this morning...stock intake. First time since I reinstalled the stock intake about 2/3 weeks ago.

Update on my side.

We plugged in the car last night at the dealer and the car had two thrown codes for idling malfunction.

Ran the BMW test plan and it said to recalibrate idling functions and values as well as recalibrating the vanos. Took about 30 minutes but successfully completed. Will post if it does it again.

Just so y'all know.
