Unexplained smell of Fuel

Today making a small trip of 50 km 38 ° celsius when I get home my wife tells me that it smells a lot of fuel... I ignore her... I stop the car for 15 minutes... I turn the car around and drive 1 km... I start to smell a lot of fresh fuel even for the A/A..

I stop the car and there is a very strong smell in the area of the rear tire where the fuel tank is, but the wheel area...

I check with a flashlight and I don't see leaks... it's been 30 min smelling and then nothing... I deposit at 1/2...

I went out to do some roundabouts... no smell... fill the tank to the top + roundabouts + full boost... no smell...

Has anyone had this "problem" I don't feel safe now..

The smell is similar to opening the gas cap and pushing the hatch... stick your nose in there...

Sent pic exact site more smell

Thanks

If you search around there have been reports of fuel tanks leaking in the earlier year F8x cars. That general area is also where the fuel pump access is located (under the right rear seat). Did you have any work done to the fuel pump recently?

Yea it's possible it could be the fuel tank vent or any component on the evap system. I see you're in Europe so I'm not sure if the emissions hardware is the same there as US. The dealer or repair shop can run a pressure test in the system and determine if it's leaking

By chance, when you fill up the gas tank… do you stop at the first sign that it's full? Or do you "top off" by continuing to fill as much petrol as possible even after the nozzle stops…?

Yes, I usually fill it to the top and more... but this day it was 1/2 full... then I filled it to the top... no more odors for now... I think we use the same EVAP

There are no road paints... 100% gasoline smell... same smell in the area of the wheel as opening the gas cap and sticking your nose inside...

I had a mechanic friend tell me years ago that topping of past the first click of the gas pump can allow liquid into the evap system and cause component failure over time. Not sure how true this is, but it does make sense, especially if it's habitually over filling over years.

Good news that it doesn't smell of gas anymore. If you notice it again after filling up it might be worth it to check the evap system for leaks. Are you getting any DTCs?

Whenever I run petrol (91 octane) it always has a very strong fuel smell. When I run E85 blends above E50 or full E85, I never smell anything.

My F80 was this way, my F82 is this way as well. Never concerned me.

Al,

Under a plastic fender liner I think the fuel tank breather line runs. It might be cracked. Take a look under there.
