The thing that I find surprising is that the insurance company totaled the car. The damage isn't insignificant but I would've never guessed it was bad enough to write it off.

I like this part of the description of the car; Primary Damage: All Over!

Looks like a killer price especially if it's mechanically sound.

Well damn that didn't even cross my mind. I was thinking the locking gas door might have prevented that. But on second look I see the gas door is gone…

Just judging from a recent post on the forum, that's probably 20-30k worth of damage. Almost every body panel looks like it will need to be replaced. What do you plan on doing with it OP?

Similar example:

"Some updates for those that are interested.
Body shop gave me the repair plan on Friday evening and total repair cost came to 20k including tax.

I gave my insurance a call this morning, asking how it's possibly totaled before the repair estimate was even done, and how it would be totaled if the repairs aren't even 50% of the value of the car. They said that they are totaling it due to the salvage value of the car and their own adjuster estimated at ~$25k in repair cost.

So I guess it really is totaled, even though it may not look like it. They are cutting me a check today, 5K more than the previous offer as I took a lot of time to negotiate that this spec is rare, the options (frozen black paint, M performance exhaust, full leather sakhir interior, etc) are pricey and a very hard to find combo, but it looks like it paid off. Going to get my belongings and say goodbye to the vehicle later today."

Yeah I hate to be a downer here OP, and thank you for attempting to bring one of our beloved cars back to life, but how is this ever going to be a good deal for you? The costs to fix that car look enormous, at a minimum you’ll be paying repair costs plus price of the car equal to a car that was never crashed. To make matters worse you then have a salvage titled car at roughly the same price as if you’d purchased a clean example. That car is absolutely thrashed all around, I don’t understand your plan here.

Best of luck regardless, hopefully it all works out for you.

Back in the day you could get parts from a chop shop and make out fairly well in restoring surface damage like this. Now you need receipts and inspections in most states. Or you can get an aftermarket body kit and just wrap the entire car and you'll come out a little ahead.

I'm in a different country, where the cost of labor is cheaper than in the US
All new glass, doors, fenders, trim, trunk, hood and whatever else is missing has been ordered
The rest (pillars and peeling CF on the roof) will be repaired.
Car is in sound mechanical condition with 0 problems after a thorough initial inspection.

Gave the car a test drive and it put the biggest grin on my face today. Feels twice as fast as my E46 M. Already have a JB4 lined up.

The seat emblems are cracking. They are absurdly expensive from BMW, for a piece of plastic. Are there any alternatives? If not, I'll 3D print some.

Will keep you guys posted with the final outcome

Edit: Here's the old and the new

engine itself is worth roughly 8K USD. other good mechanical parts and you can make a nice profit on it if you plan to part it out.
