I have to agree with most comments regarding the new 4 series/M4 interior. It's just not good enough and really doesn't move the game on. I visited a BMW showroom on the weekend and was disappointed by the overall design and quality of the interior (especially the center console area). It's not very sleek and looks unfinished. The cupholder/coin-tray 'thing' is a real eyesore, and reminds me of something you would find in a SUV rather than a sports/luxury car. The control display is also not well integrated as in other new BMW cars. It's too similar to the interior of the 3 series sedan and quality inside is also not much better than the new VW GTI. I think they really missed an opportunity here and I had hoped that the new 4 series/M4 interior design would have been closer to a 6 series/M6.

The 3-series/M3 has always been known for spartan interiors - they're pretty much generally regarded as the worst interior of their class, though it's not my personal opinion. It's a budget sports car for people who value the BMW power train and chase some kind of highly-subjective, ill-defined, over-marketed notion of "Freude am Fahren" that reverberates the echo-chambers of MotorTrend and BMW forums everywhere.
You should not be: 1) thinking that what you're seeing here is a fully-optioned out interior, 2) comparing the (what is most likely the base) interior to that of up-market cars like the 5/6/7-series, 3) expecting luxury details standard; if you want value, you're shopping the wrong brand - you're paying a premium for the badge and the engine. 4) expecting a jump in interior standards from the outgoing M3. They are trying to keep the same price point or even under if accounting for inflation. Interior at best will be a slight improvement, at worst the same level. The outgoing E9X interior looks disgustingly dated, and incoming model looks like it'll have some cheap-looking plastic "chrome" trim. Big deal, not really that big of a quality difference to start whining about it, especially when you can just option it out. Edit: People shopping the $60-80K tier should really be dialing down their expectations. I know mine, and I know I'll only now be satisfied at the 100-120K level (where BMW's offerings are truly pathetic), hence this will unfortunately most likely be my first and last BMW. Yes. What people need to understand is that we comment on the pictures in this thread. No need to be defiensive about the production cars interior since we don't know if this is what it will look like and what options will be available. These pictures are all we have and it's fair game to say whatever we think about them. It's however also fair to express concerns about the production car based on these pix and the F3X interior. $80k is not peanuts and there are full of examples of cars in this price range that have high quality, attractive interiors. Spartan is ok, cheap and plasticky not so much. |

Ya know, they say "M" is for marketing and perhaps I know why....
People... The e46 m3 had some cheap plastic, the e36 m3 was ALL cheap plastic, the e90 m3 was an exercise in cost-cutting, and the e30 m3 was a 4-cylinder. It's about the drive. |

1. Each iteration has made major progress in interior quality. I owned 2 E30s and 2 E36s and my E90's interior is light years better. I expect the same progress in this new M3. 2. The 3-series is now the new 5-series in many aspects. It's nearly the size of an E39 and there is now a new entry level BMW sedan in the 1-series. The three has moved up at the same time the 5-series is no longer a god option as a driver's car IMO. It's just enormous in every way and that leaves many former M5 buyers looking at the M3 and the expectations on quality of materials is rising. Leave the low rental interiors for the M2. Not sure what people expected from the interior. The E9X M3 was not a rapid departure from the standard fare 3er, in fact, if it weren't for Fox Red, it looked quite dull. Same formula here, but this time bespoke buckets are added. Wish the M logo was embossed on the leather. Anyways, we were never going to get anything like the i8 interior, so I am not sure I understand the complaints entirely?

I hope they offer 2 tone, the black is a bit plain, not up to bar for a 60-70k dollar car. Then again all german cars are bit grey and dark like their builders

Why everyone jump to conclusions about buyers remorse? I have absolutely no remorse and only criticize the new interior because it really looks like shit in these pics. I hope production models will be better. Anyone who thinks audi interiors are super nice hasnt freaking "clicked" any of their buttons. Sounds and feels so freaking cheap compared to what they look like.

It's not just the interior, though - there are other good reasons to pick Audis vs the comparable BMWs: S4/S5 over 335i/435i, SQ5 over X3, etc. I also own a 2013 BMW M5, but would get an Audi RS7 instead if I was buying now. |

I would get an s4 over 335 too but the comments about the interior. All my friends have audis and the cabin is a gem but everytime a button is "clicked" - i quote that because thats how it sounds: cheap, plastic, and annoying. Even they say thats the downfall of the car.
But i would choose M over RS. But i would chose r8 v10+ or GT over any M Can we get an M supercoupe for gods sake? No not the i8 neither. Nor the m6. |
