S85 (5 liter V10) to S63 (4.4 liter V8), S65 (4 liter V8) to S55 (3 liter I6)... MB reduced the 6.3 liter to 4 liter. Audi did the same thing. Another part of BMW decision about S55 is cost saving since they had already designed N55, so they followed the same platform ....exactly what they did with N63 to S63 and then to S63tu... even the new X5M/X6M has the same platform but more torque...
Also the question is why they need to design a V8 for M3/M4 to generate more power and torque for a RWD car that already has enough power and torque for its weight? MB put a V8 engine for C63 to generate more power while the car is heavier. Audi may do the same thing for its AWD lineup...
The companies have had a different strategy for numerous generations.

Benz chose to keep a V8 at the top of the performance map across its entire line as it did in the last generation, except this time with FI.

BMW differentiates their top offerings across the board with number of cylinders... It used to be NA8 to NA10... now its TT6 vs TT8...

Nothing really has changed...

BMW went DCT/6mt across the board... Benz went auto... There is different strategies going on here and its nothing weird...

Well, the article comparo between c63 and m3 stated 14 mpg for the C63S and 17 for the M3 in aggressive driving.

I highly doubt it is more efficient than the I6 there is simply no way when driven hard not to use gas.

Unless the V8 has cylinder deativation, it is still larger displacement than the 3.0 I6.

We will have to see.

how some people try to get around to twist things around.. So sad.. How the hell do you know how equally "driven" during the review for those numbers? Im talking about standard manufacturer claimed MPG. Meaning when driven sensibly, which car is more efficient. Last time i calculated c63 european claimed numbers, merc was showing 26-7 combined US mpg. Considering c63 is heavier car, the v8 is much more efficient then i6tt. End of discussion. More cylinders doesnt always mean less efficient, esp in FI world / perf oriented engines. Plenty 4 bangers get worse mpg then I6tt. Evo, sti for starters did 17-22 w 2 liter.
Dont let fanboyism blind you from common sense.

lol. no need to attack me personally. I own both MB and BMW products currently in my garage. Believe me, I like variety.

back to your topic- I do not see any current engines that are made by MB carrying any astonishing MPG. (usa) I question how the numbers are achieved without any cylinder deactivation or seriously special technologies that would make the car more efficient than a 6 cylinder.

C and D on their long term m3 is avg 20/mpg.

STI /awd is AWD, they do not get good mpg- I had a S4, horrible mpg.
