Gopro Hero8 w/ external mic issues

Help guys,

I saw a thread that began talking about how some of your guys setup external mic. I can't get mine to work.

I have what appears to to be same setup as I saw someone attach the external mic to the license plate with the provided lavalier shirt clip thing. But, I cant get the daamn thing to work.

Gopro Hero 8
Go pro mic adapter usbc
lavalier external mic (works perfect on my iphone)
tried the provided mic jack with 3 lines to 1 line or whatever that thing is.

I've tried every combination and various mic input settings on camera it just does not work.

I'm also very disappointed I cant plug in external mic to my gopro max 360. So the hero8 will have to do.

Hey man,

So you need to use the TRS adapter. External mic adapter can only read the two ring jack not the three ring. Make sure they click together, mine required some force to fully seat into the adapter so make sure it's fully in.

Other thing is, use STANDARD MIC. No boost.

The GP 5-6-7-8-9-10 all work with external mikes. Not sure if they work with the mike you have though.
The more modern GPs, I think from the 7 or 8 on, require the dongle to convert USBC to 3.5mm. I also remove the internal battery completely and connect it to the car's power. You seem to have this dongle.

Use the unboosted mike setting in the camera

Yea that no boost option is super important or you will most likely start clipping real hard. I really wish the DJI action had that feature. Is my main gripe with it... Will get a Gp someday.

Just set that and be lucky you get it

So I need to use gopro mic adapter to TRS adapter to my 3 line mic?

And use normal mic setting and push it in really hard.

So, my hardware will NOT work is this correct?

I think I got it to work!

I used the provided 2 line to 3 line adapter that came with the lavalier lapel mic thing whatever its called.

Plugged that into the gopro mic adapter and pushed all connections in really hard and used the normal mic settings and I "think" it worked. It sounds like it lol

I will report back after a little test drive. Thank you!

When I did that it didn't make any extra sound but, ok 👍🏻 trust in the process!!
