Just wanted to report back that my Akebonos have been completely silent and low dust! The best of both worlds has finally been achieved (quiet and low dust).

It's only been 500 miles since I've installed them. Quick observations:

- Improved bite compared to the Z16s, but still worse than stock and prone to fade in hard driving.
- Clunking when shifting between first and reverse is muted but still present. Used the replacement clips provided by Powerstop for the fronts and OE for the rear (the Powerstop ones were larger and harder to squeeze in).
- Greatly reduced screeching when reversing if the car has been sitting for a while.
- So far, no squeaking when rolling to a stop. Used CRC disc brake quiet instead of the provided lube.
- I'd say they produce about 15% more dust than the Z16s, which is still dramatically less than OEM and worth the sacrifice in bite.

Overall, I'm happy with the Z23s and would recommend them to others for normal street driving.
2000 mile update:

Now that colder temps are here (well sorta for us Californians), the Z23s screech like a motherf*cker. I've woken my kids up backing out of the garage in the morning, and scared people in parking lots approaching stop signs if the car sat for a while.

I haven't noticed any degradation or changes in performance, but they are horribly, embarrassingly loud. I'll try bedding them in again before tossing them for the Akebonos.

Do the akebono a clunk as you transition from reversing to drive or vice verse? My z23 have some play in them so they hit the camper every time I switch directions.

In terms of performance, they are about the same as the Powerstops. In terms of dust accumulation, they are about the same as the Powerstops. In terms of noise, the Akebonos have no noise.

Yes, give the Akebonos a try. They have been silent for me.

CA here as well, I literally gave my Z23s away after just 2 weeks of use because of the screeching noise as you described. Absolutely horrible.

Thank you for the update regarding those Akebonos. I just ordered my complete set from Rock Auto.

Been running porter field R4-S for about a year and as mileage goes up they are starting to squeal more and more during slow braking to a stop. I'm hating them

Just wanted to give an update on the Akebonos. It's been unusually cold lately in SoCal. For the first time this week, I noticed a faint squeal when backing up on cold start (car sitting for 8+hrs). It's not as loud as the Powerstops were. But then again, my Powerstops didn't squeal in the beginning either. So we'll see how it goes. I'll keep you guys updated.

Good news is that the brake dust is almost nonexistent and there is no clunk.

The OEM dust is so annoying.. I clean the wheels after every ride, like a lunatic

pulled a trigger on Akebono's, they should be here next week..hopefully that will end my misery and endless microfiber cloths I've destroyed..

Update:

Installed the Z23 powerstop pads and not a single squeak pulsating noise. Did the break in procedure and to be honest it feels the same as oem. My only problem was that one of the shims wasn't in spec and I had to hammer one side down in order for it to slide in. Other than that no problem with installing the rest.

I haven't seen any ceramic pads for the M2C brakes; just semi-metallics. I'm pretty sure someone may eventually come out with a set but honestly, you're such a small group. Your brakes must look incredible though.

Caution: Brake pad oversize weights

If you have 18" wheels be very careful with pads having oversize weights, they can damage your wheels. I had this problem with EBC Yellowstuff pads the weights are too large. I cut them off with no ill effects and a positive of some weight reduction. Many track pads do not have these harmonic weights. They are for NVH reduction.

By the way the Yellowstuff dust about the same as M pads, but work well. I have used Akebono on several BMW's but when put them on my E53 X5 am not happy with them, so plan to change the fronts early.

EBC redstuff are ok for fast road. They even survived the track. Perhaps a bit more expensive though. The dust is non existent, cold bite decent enough, quiet and last pretty well. Have them in two of my cars.

I've put a few hundred miles on the Akebonos now...only a tiny squeak when backing up in the mornings, but like 3/10 compared to 11/10 for the Z23s (not enough to startle my neighbors).

Bad news gents - have PowerStop Z23 on my car - squeak for me is super minor, but what's not quite so minor is the fact that the balance/weights/whatever on the pad fractured off rubbing the wheel. Fortunately it didn't cause any damage to the caliper or wheel, but I had to go get a floor jack and tools to pull the wheel to remove the weight thing that had fallen between the caliper and rotor. I then realized that the inside pad had the same thing but on the opposite (trailing) side.

Emailed PowerStop with a general "wtf?" - no damage to the wheel or caliper, and no stones or sticks stuck in the wheel. I think the things broke off due to brittle metal (you can see the porous break) and very cold temps combined with vibration.

Luckily no damage. The pads normally have 2 weights on each pad, so you allready lost 2 weights....
That's some very bad quality
