6MT Gear Sensor 23142283799

Seeking information on how the gear sensor (23142283799) works on the 6MT transmission.

Context - we are doing a retrofit of GS6-45BZ 6MT out of a 2016 F22 M2 (also found in F* M3/m4) into a 2011 e90 n55 335i (also 45bz, but the shorter bellhousing variant).

Observations:
  • We are assuming the m2 gear sensor is magnetically activated.
  • We assume the 2-channels are consumed in a binary pattern by the ECU to determine the specific gear or gear range.
  • If the 2-channels are both open or both closed, then this would be Neutral and Reverse respectively.
  • If channel 1 is open and channel 2 is closed, then it might represent 1st, 2nd, 3rd as a group. Not sure.
  • And where then if channel 1 is closed and channel 2 is open then it might represent 4th, 5th, and 6th as a group.
  • We assume that if we can find the logical combination for reverse, then we can use the gear sensor as a switch instead of drilling out the old "reverse switch" position in the casting.

Questions
  1. Can the Gear Sensor be retrofitted to work with the E90 in place of the Reverse Switch
  2. What is the mapping of the Gear Sensor so the right modificaiton can be made to adapt?

Not at this time. I found one post where someone coded both the gear sensor and reverse switch for a build, but didn't claim they were able to code the gear sensor as a replacement to the reverse switch.
